Form 940, Employer's Annual Federal Unemployment (FUTA) Tax Return, is used to report employer annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax. FUTA tax, together with state unemployment systems, provides for payments of unemployment compensation to workers who have lost their jobs. Most employers pay both federal and state unemployment taxes.
The only items adjusted on Form 940 are TC 29X and FUTA wage and tax amounts.
All increases and decreases in tax and wages must use reference alphas in conjunction with the state indicated on the return. Use the appropriate alpha below followed by the state code.
"W" is used to increase or decrease the wages posted for Form 940.
"T " is used to increase or decrease the taxes posted for Form 940.
