10.48.010 - Street designation—Authorization.

Whenever any resolution by the city council designates and describes any street or portion thereof as a "truck route," the use of which is permitted to any vehicle exceeding a maximum gross weight limit of eight tons, the traffic engineer is authorized to designate such street or streets by appropriate signs as "truck routes" for the movement of vehicles exceeding a maximum gross weight limit of eight tons.

10.48.020 - Ingress and egress to restricted streets permitted.

When any such truck route or routes are established and designated by appropriate signs, the operator of any vehicle exceeding a maximum gross weight limit of eight tons shall drive on such route or routes and none other, except that nothing in this chapter shall prohibit the operator of any vehicle exceeding a maximum gross weight of eight tons coming from a truck route having ingress and egress by direct route to and from restricted streets when necessary for the purpose of making pickups or deliveries of goods, wares and merchandise from or to any building or structure located on such restricted streets or for the purpose of delivering materials to be used in the actual bona fide repair, alteration, remodeling or construction of any building or structure upon such restricted streets for which a building permit has previously been obtained therefor.

10.48.030 - Commercial vehicles prohibited on certain streets—Exemption.

A. Whenever any resolution by the town council designates and describes any street or portion thereof as a street the use of which is prohibited by any commercial vehicle, the traffic engineer shall erect and maintain appropriate signs on those streets affected by such regulation.

B. Those streets and parts of streets established by resolution of the town council are declared to be streets, the use of which is prohibited by any commercial vehicle. The provisions of this section shall not apply to passenger buses under the jurisdiction of the public utilities commission.

10.48.040 - Gross weight limits on certain streets.

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation as principal agent or employee for himself or itself, or for another person, firm or corporation, to drive, haul or propel, or cause to be driven, hauled or propelled, upon any paved street, road or highway within the town:

A. Any truck, wagon or other vehicle or two wheels which, with its load, weighs in excess of eight thousand pounds; or

B. Any truck, wagon or other vehicle of four wheels which with its load weighs in excess of sixteen thousand pounds; or

C. Any truck, wagon or other vehicle of six or a greater number of wheels, which, with its load, weighs over twenty-four thousand pounds;

D. Provided, further, that in the cases where a single piece or unit of machinery or equipment, when so loaded upon a vehicle, of the number of wheels last mentioned, weighs in excess of the prohibited amount, the same may be transported over and along a road or highway under special permit from the town engineer, subject to such reasonable restrictions and regulations as to the route and the method of loading and of transportation as the town engineer may impose; and provided, further, that the prohibitions in this chapter contained shall not apply to the use of road rollers, or other construction equipment being employed in the original construction of roads and pavement.

10.48.050 - Weighing vehicles—Authorized.

For the purpose of ascertaining and determining the weight of any vehicle suspected of noncompliance with the restrictions in this chapter, the police department or other arresting officer or the city engineer is empowered to require the suspected loaded vehicle to be weighed at the nearest appropriate scales.

10.48.060 - Exemptions—Permit issuance.

A. No person shall move or operate upon any of the streets of the town any vehicle with a load or loads in excess of those permitted by this chapter or the Vehicle Code without a written permit from the city engineer.

B. The city engineer may authorize a load or loads in excess of those allowed for in this chapter or the Vehicle Code, if, in his judgment, the streets upon which such vehicle is to be operated can safely withstand the additional weight, or if the applicant will guarantee to the town that all costs of repair to the streets or to the public property of the town damaged by the movement of such load or loads will be paid in full. Such permit shall be granted upon such conditions and upon depositing such bond as the city engineer in his discretion may require.

10.48.070 - Exemptions—Buses, utility vehicles.

Those streets and parts of streets established by resolution of the city council are declared to be truck routes for the movement of vehicles exceeding a maximum gross weight of eight tons. The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to passenger buses under the jurisdiction of the public utilities commission, or to any vehicle owned by a public utility while necessarily in use in the construction, installation or repair of any public facility.

10.48.080 - Prohibited traction equipment.

No person shall operate over the town streets any flange wheel or tracked vehicle, piece of equipment or machinery which has lugs, cleats, flanges, or other projections on the wheels or treads, except a filler block may be placed on each section of tread so that a flat bearing surface will be in contact with the pavement at all times.

10.48.090 - Moving building.

No person shall move, transport, convey or store on, over or across, any street, public paved road, alley, right-of-way or driveway, any building or structure, such as a residence being moved into or out of the town, any auxiliary building used for construction purposes, or other heavy or bulky object, piece of equipment, machinery, unless such building or object is transported on a wheeled vehicle or vehicles whose maximum wheel load is within the limits designated by the city council by ordinance or otherwise, and permission is obtained from the chief of police or superintendent of streets to so move, transport or store the building or object.
