609.2 Air-Moving Systems and Smoke Detectors in Group I-2 Occupancies — 2025 California Mechanical Code

Group I-2 Occupancies. In Group I-2 occupancies, air- moving systems returning air in excess of 2,000 cubic feet per minute (ft [3] /min) (0.9439 m [3] /s) from enclosed spaces within buildings shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff. Auto- matic shutoff shall be accomplished by interrupting the power source of the air-moving equipment upon detection of smoke in the return air duct or plenum upstream of any filters, exhaust air connections, outside air connections, or decont- amination equipment and appliances.

Group I-2 occupancies having occupied floors located more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access shall be provided with duct smoke detection in accordance with this section and the California Fire Code, Section 907.2.13.1.
