Article VIII — Maintenance of Signs

15.148.730 Generally.

Each sign shall be maintained in a safe, presentable and good condition, including the replacement of defective parts, painting, repainting, cleaning, and other acts required for the maintenance of such sign. The director of building inspections shall require compliance or removal of any sign determined by the director to be in violation of this section in accordance with the provisions of Article X of this chapter. (Prior code § 3.09.170)

15.148.740 Abandoned signs.

Except as otherwise provided in Chapter 15.48 of this title, any sign which is located on property which becomes vacant and unoccupied for a period of three months or more, or any sign which was erected for an occupant or business unrelated to the present occupant or his or her business, or a sign which pertains to a time, event, or purpose which no longer applies, shall be deemed to have been abandoned. Permanent signs applicable to a business temporarily suspended because of a change of ownership or management of such business shall not be deemed abandoned unless the property remains vacant for a period of six months or more. An abandoned sign is prohibited and shall be promptly removed by the owner of the sign or owner of the premises. (Prior code § 3.09.171)

15.148.750 Dangerous or defective signs.

No person shall maintain or permit to be maintained on any premises owned or controlled by him or her any sign which is in a dangerous or defective condition. Any such sign shall be promptly removed or repaired by the owner of the sign or the owner of the premises. (Prior code § 3.09.172)

15.148.760 Illegal signs.

No person shall erect or maintain or permit to be erected or maintained on any premises owned or controlled by him or her any sign which does not comply with the provisions of this chapter. (Prior code § 3.09.173)

15.148.770 Street improvement projects.

Any sign projecting over a public right-of-way on April 4, 1970, that was subject to removal or relocation at the owner's expense, pursuant to a permit or ordinance of the city, shall be removed by the owner or altered at the owner's expense to comply with the regulations of this chapter if, as the result of, or after completion of a street improvement project, such sign does not or would not comply with the regulations of this chapter.
