Article III — Automatic Fire Extinguishing System

15.100.130 Fire suppression systems.¶

Fire sprinkler systems with non-fire protection connection (N.F.P.A. 13 Section 5-6) will not be allowed. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1212, 15.09.901)

15.100.140 Secondary supply.¶

In addition to the main water supply, a secondary on-site supply of water equal to the hydraulically calculated sprinkler design demand plus one hundred (100) gallons per minute additional for the total standpipe system shall be provided. This supply shall be automatically available and shall have a minimum duration of thirty (30) minutes. A fill device shall be installed to automatically maintain the required water supply.

A. Open type reservoirs, pools, fountains, or wells shall not be used as the on-site water supply.
B. Only approved corrosion resistant type tanks shall be permitted.
C. The on-site water supply shall be provided with a low level indicator and shall be interconnected to the life safety control panel. The low water level indicator shall be a separate zone and shall transmit a trouble signal only, when the total volume has been reduced to the minimum required amount.
D. Locations of auxiliary water tanks and controls shall be approved by the authority having jurisdiction. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1213, 15.09.902)

15.100.150 Fire department standpipe connections.¶

A minimum of two separate fire department standpipe connections shall be provided for every highrise building and shall be interconnected. Each connection shall have the required number of inlets.

Sizing of piping shall not be diminished and shall meet the provisions of 1988 U.B.C. Standard 38-2. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1214, 15.09.903)

15.100.160 Fire department standpipe connection locations.¶

Fire department standpipe connections shall be located not less than fifteen (15) feet or more than fifty (50) feet from a fire hydrant and not more than thirty (30) feet from a paved roadway. Fire department standpipe connections shall not be placed within an alley, nor shall they be less than one hundred fifty (150) feet apart.

A. Location of standpipe connections shall be approved by the fire department.
B. Additional fire hydrants shall be installed as required by the fire department in order to satisfy the conditions of this chapter.

C. Fire department standpipe connections shall be located in a manner so that they are not subject to damage. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1215, 15.09.904)
