Article II — Fire Department Equipment

15.100.060 Fire department equipment storage rooms.¶

Fire department equipment storage rooms shall be provided to store the required fire fighting equipment and shall comply with the following:

A. Each equipment storage room shall have a minimum of forty-eight (48) square feet of floor space, with no dimension less than six feet. Size may be reduced when approved by the fire department.
B. Ceiling height shall be at least seven feet, six inches.
C. Rooms shall be of two hour fire-resistive construction with no opening rated less than one and one-half hour.
D. Rooms shall be locked with access by the fire department only. Keys shall be provided in a fire department key box.
E. The door to the equipment storage room shall have a permanent sign stating, "FIRE DEPARTMENT USE ONLY."
F. Stairway doors shall be identified to indicate the location of equipment storage rooms in the following manner:

The stairway which is adjacent to equipment storage rooms shall have an exterior sign on the first floor level, or fire department entrance level, identifying the floors where rooms are located adjacent to that stairway. These stairways shall have roof access. (Refer to fire department design and test specification manual) 2. At each floor level where equipment storage rooms are located, signs shall be placed on the stairway side to identify that floor as an equipment storage room location. G. Shelves, cabinets and racks shall be installed as specified by the fire department.
H. The door to the equipment storage room shall be a minimum three feet by six feet, eight inches in size. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1205, 15.08.801)

15.100.070 Location and access.¶

The equipment storage rooms shall be located adjacent to an enclosed exit stairway which provides access to the roof. Placement of the equipment storage rooms shall begin five floors above the ground level and then placed at every fifth floor in an ascending order. A. When travel distance between exit stairways exceeds two hundred (200) feet, both stairways shall have equipment storage rooms adjacent to them, meeting the requirements of Section 15.100.060 of this chapter. Such locations shall be on an approved alternate floor schedule.

B. When parking structures continue below grade, equipment storage rooms are not required on those levels. C. Access to the equipment storage rooms shall be within ten (10) feet of the exit stairway. The door to each equipment storage room shall be visible from the entrance to the exit stairway, and shall be properly identified. The room shall be readily accessible at all times for fire department use. D. The fire equipment storage room may be placed within the service elevator lobby, provided travel distance to the nearest stairway is no greater than thirty (30) feet, and it meets the provisions of Section 15.100.040 exception #2 for location. 15.100.080 Equipment required.¶

Each fire department equipment storage room shall contain the following:

A. Three fifty-foot lengths of double-jacketed rubber-lined two and one-half inch hose;
B. Three fifty-foot lengths of double-jacketed rubber-lined one and one-half inch hose; C. Six lightweight MSA air bottles, forty-five (45) cubic feet in size;
D. One each two and one-half inch by one and one-half inch reducer fitting;
E. One each two and one-half inch by one and one-half inch by one and one-half inch gated Y fitting;

F. Two devices to plug sprinkler heads of each type installed;

G. Six each door wedges;

H. One fire phone handset per room with outlet;

I. Air tank fill station outlet. All equipment shall be approved by and meet specifications provided by the fire department. All equipment shall be purchased by the building owner/agent. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1207, 15.08.803)

15.100.090 Maintenance.¶

After initial approvals and certifications, all equipment shall be tested and maintained by the Sacramento fire department. All equipment storage rooms shall require an annual fire department inspection permit. (See Article 4 of the Uniform Fire Code) (Prior code §§ 9.28.1208, 15.08.804)

15.100.100 Fire department breathing air system.¶

A piped air system shall be installed to allow fire department to fill portable air bottles. An outlet shall be installed in each equipment storage room. The inlet shall be placed in a location approved by the fire department. The air system shall meet or exceed the fire department design and test specifications manual. 15.100.110 On-site access roadways for fire department.¶

On-site access roadways (where required) shall have an all-weather driving surface capable of supporting seventy thousand (70,000) pounds and shall have a minimum unobstructed width of twenty (20) feet and shall not be less than ten (10) feet from the building. Access ways shall have adequate turning radius for fire department apparatus and shall have a minimum of thirteen (13) feet, six inches vertical clearance. The maximum grade shall not exceed four percent. Firefighting aerial apparatus setup locations shall be a minimum width of thirty (30) feet. (Prior code §§

15.100.120 Roadway obstructions.

The required width of access ways shall not be obstructed in any manner. Approved "NO PARKING" signs and/or other appropriate notice prohibiting obstructions shall be required and shall be maintained. Prohibited obstructions include but are not limited to landscaping, park benches, and dumpsters. (Prior code §§ 9.28.1211, 15.08.807)
