2.62.010 - Sale of unclaimed property after notice.

Any unclaimed property in the possession of the police department, except unclaimed bicycles, shall be held by the police department for a period of at least four months, and unclaimed bicycles shall be held by the police department for a period of at least three months. Thereafter such property shall be transferred to the city purchasing officer acting as the city purchasing and stores agency, for sale to the public at auction. After such transfer, such unclaimed property shall not be redeemable by the owner or any other person entitled to possession. If the city purchasing officer determines that any such property transferred to him for sale pursuant to this chapter is needed for public use, such property may be retained by him for city use and need not be sold. Such property may be sold at public auction to the highest bidder. Notice of such sale shall be given by the purchasing officer at least five days before the time fixed for sale, by publication once in a newspaper of general circulation published in Ventura County. Any property remaining unsold after being offered at such public auction may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the purchasing officer. The proceeds of any such sale shall be deposited in general funds of the city.
