Where excavation is necessary to install an appliance, the depth shall extend not less than 6 inches (152 mm) below and 12 inches (305 mm) on all sides of the appliance, except on the service side, which shall have 30 inches (762 mm). Where the depth of the excavation for either the appliance or passageway exceeds 12 inches (305 mm), walls shall be lined with concrete or masonry 4 inches (102 mm) above the adjoining ground level. Exception: [HCD 1 & HCD 2] Liquefied petroleum gas (LP-Gas) appliances as described in Section 303.7.1.
