10.04.010 - Definitions.¶
For the purpose of this chapter, certain words and phrases are defined and certain provisions shall be construed as herein set forth, unless it is apparent from the context that a different meaning is intended.
"Alley" is every way less than thirty (30) feet in width between property lines.
"Business district" is that portion of a highway and the property contiguous thereto upon one side of which highway for a distance of three hundred (300) feet, where fifty (50) percent or more of the contiguous property fronting thereon is occupied by buildings in use for business, or upon both sides of which highway collectively for a distance of one hundred and fifty (150) feet, where fifty (50) percent or more of the contiguous property fronting thereon is so occupied.
"Crosswalk" is either: (a) that portion of a roadway ordinarily included within the prolongation or connection of the boundary lines of sidewalks at intersections where the intersecting roadways meet at approximately right angles, except the prolongation of any such lines from an alley across a street; or (b) any portion of a roadway distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossings by lines or other markings on the surface.
"Curb" is the boundary of that portion of a street designed for the use of a vehicle.
"Intersection" is the area embraced within the prolongation of the curb lines of two or more streets which join at an angle, whether or not one such street crosses the other.
"Loading zone" is that space adjacent to a curb reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles actually engaged in loading or unloading of materials.
"Official traffic signals" includes any device, whether manually, electrically or mechanically operated, by which traffic is alternately directed to stop and to proceed, and which is placed or erected by authority of a public body or official having jurisdiction.
"Official traffic control devices" includes all signs, signals, markings, and devices not inconsistent with this title placed or erected by authority of a public body or official having jurisdiction for the purpose of regulating, warning or guiding traffic.
"Operator" includes the driver, rider or leader of a horse, and a person who pushes, draws, propels, operates or who is in charge of a vehicle.
"Park" is the standing of a vehicle, whether occupied or not, otherwise than temporarily, for the purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading passengers or materials.
"Parkway" is that portion of a street other than a roadway or a sidewalk.
"Driveway apron" is that portion of a regularly established driveway lying between a property line and any curb, the purpose of which is to provide vehicular access from the street across the curb, parkway, and sidewalk to the property fronting thereon or abutting thereto.
"Passenger loading zone" is that space adjacent to a curb reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles actually engaged in loading or unloading of passengers.
"Pedestrian" is any person afoot.
"Roadway" includes that portion of a street between the regularly established curb lines and that portion of any street, parkway, bridge or tunnel, which is included between the curbs.
"Right-of-way" is the privilege of the immediate use of the street.
"Safety zone" is that marked portion of a roadway reserved for the exclusive use of pedestrians.
"Sidewalk" is that portion of a street other than a roadway or a parkway.
"Stop" or "stop when required" is a complete cessation of movement.
"Street" is every way more than thirty (30) feet in width between property lines.
"Traffic" includes pedestrians and vehicles while using any street or alley for purposes of travel.
"Vehicle" includes every device in, upon or by which any person or property is or may be propelled, moved or drawn upon a street, except a device moved by human power.
"Vehicle code" is the Vehicle Code of the State of California.
