Special fixtures, special‑use sinks, and special‑purpose connections

If you plan to install an ornamental fountain, aquarium, baptistery, or a restaurant special‑use sink, the CPC requires AHJ approval for fixtures needing water/waste connections, sheet‑metal sinks must be bonderized or galvanized at not less than No.16 gauge and properly braced, and special fixtures must be made of approved corrosion‑resistant materials (see §§ 406.1–406.3) .

Last reviewed: July 6, 2026

What the code requires — 2-4 sentences

The California Plumbing Code requires that special fixtures and specialties that need water or waste connections be reviewed and approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction before installation (§ 406.1). Special‑use sinks in restaurant kitchens and similar settings are permitted to be constructed of approved bonderized or galvanized sheet steel not less than No. 16 U.S. gauge (0.0635 in / 1.6 mm) and must be adequately designed, constructed and braced (§ 406.2). Special‑use fixtures must be made of approved materials (soapstone; chemical stoneware; copper‑based or nickel‑based alloys; corrosion‑resistant steel; or other materials suited to the use) (§ 406.3) .

The single most important rule: submit any baptistery, ornamental pond, aquarium, fountain basin, or similar fixture that requires a water or waste connection to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for approval before installing it (§ 406.1) .

Requirements in detail

Scope & approach

  • Special fixtures — includes items such as baptisteries, ornamental and lily ponds, aquaria, ornamental fountain basins, and similar items that require water and/or waste connections. These installations must be submitted for approval prior to installation (§ 406.1) .
  • Special‑use sinks — restaurant and other high‑demand sinks have specific permitted materials and minimum thickness requirements; sheet‑metal sinks must be properly designed and braced (§ 406.2) .
  • Special‑use fixtures — list of acceptable materials for fixtures exposed to corrosive or specialized conditions is specified (soapstone, chemical stoneware, copper/nickel alloys, corrosion‑resistant steel, or other appropriate materials) (§ 406.3) .

Decision table — what to check when planning an installation

Decision factor Requirement / value When it applies Code Reference
Approval before install Must submit for approval to the Authority Having Jurisdiction Baptisteries, ornamental/lily ponds, aquaria, ornamental fountain basins, and similar fixtures that require water, waste, or both § 406.1
Sheet‑metal sinks — permitted materials Approved bonderized or galvanized sheet steel Restaurant kitchen sinks and other special‑use sinks § 406.2
Sheet‑metal sinks — minimum thickness Not less than No. 16 U.S. gauge (0.0635 in / 1.6 mm) Applies to permitted sheet‑metal special‑use sinks § 406.2
Sheet‑metal sinks — structural requirements Must be adequately designed, constructed, and braced in an approved manner All sheet‑metal plumbing fixtures used as special‑use sinks § 406.2
Materials for special‑use fixtures Use soapstone; chemical stoneware; copper‑based alloy; nickel‑based alloy; corrosion‑resistant steel; or other materials suited for intended use Fixtures subject to corrosive or specialized service § 406.3

Design & approval notes

  • The requirement in § 406.1 is procedural: regardless of material, if the fixture resembles the listed types and needs water/waste connections, it must be submitted for AHJ approval before installation .
  • For sheet‑metal sinks, meeting No. 16 gauge (0.0635 in / 1.6 mm) is a minimum; the Code also requires the fixture be adequately braced — plan support framing and fastenings accordingly (§ 406.2) .
  • The materials listed in § 406.3 are examples of acceptable durable, corrosion‑resistant materials; the Code allows “other materials suited for the intended use” when appropriate, but such choices are subject to the AHJ’s approval (§ 406.3) .

Exceptions & special cases

  • The Code text for § 406.1–406.3 does not list specific numerical exceptions; instead it requires submission for approval and lists permitted materials and minimum gauge. If a proposed material or construction is not explicitly listed (for example, a composite material or a different gauge of sheet metal), it must be justified and submitted to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for approval under § 406.1 and the material rules of § 406.3 .
  • The Code permits “other materials suited for the intended use” for special‑use fixtures; however, when the Code does not explicitly address a material, the AHJ’s approval is required under § 406.1 and § 406.3 .
  • Note: The provided CPC excerpts include § 406.4 addressing zinc alloy components (standards/listing), but the user requested control of § 406.0–406.3 specifically. If you need guidance on zinc alloy components (§ 406.4), say so and I will include it with the applicable citation .

Common mistakes

  • Failing to submit the installation of an ornamental fountain, aquarium, or baptistery for AHJ approval before installing — noncompliance with § 406.1 is a frequent oversight .
  • Using sheet‑metal sinks thinner than No. 16 gauge or assuming all stainless or sheet metals are permitted without checking the minimum gauge and approval requirements — violates § 406.2 .
  • Omitting structural bracing or using inadequate support for sheet‑metal fixtures — the Code explicitly requires sheet‑metal fixtures be adequately designed, constructed and braced (§ 406.2) .
  • Selecting a material for a special‑use fixture that is not corrosion‑resistant or not justified for its intended use without AHJ approval — reference § 406.3 for acceptable materials and the AHJ approval path for alternatives .

Worked example

Scenario: A restaurant owner wants to install a new three‑compartment dish sink assembly fabricated from bonderized sheet steel.

  1. Identify the rule: Restaurant kitchen sinks fall under special‑use sinks governed by § 406.2 .
  2. Material & thickness check: The sink must be of approved bonderized or galvanized sheet steel and not less than No. 16 U.S. gauge (0.0635 in / 1.6 mm). If the proposed sink is fabricated from No. 16 or thicker bonderized steel, the material requirement is met; if it is No. 18 or another thinner gauge, it does not meet the minimum in § 406.2 and is noncompliant .
  3. Structural check: Ensure the sink assembly is adequately designed, constructed and braced (supports, hangers, backstops, reinforcing where required) per § 406.2. Document bracing details on the submittal drawings .
  4. Approval process: Prepare submittal documents (plans showing materials, gauge, bracing, connections, and waste routing) and submit them to the Authority Having Jurisdiction if the installation would be considered a “specialty” or if the AHJ requires preapproval (especially if the sink is an unusual custom assembly). While § 406.2 permits the materials, § 406.1 establishes the AHJ submission requirement for fixtures/specialties that require water and/or waste connections (if the sink assembly design could be considered a specialty) .
  5. Outcome: If the AHJ accepts the material/gauge and the bracing, proceed with installation; if not, revise materials/design per AHJ direction.

Frequently asked questions

Do I always have to submit an ornamental fountain for approval?

Yes. Any baptistery, ornamental or lily pond, aquarium, ornamental fountain basin, or similar fixture that requires a water or waste connection must be submitted to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for approval prior to installation (§ 406.1) .

Is stainless steel allowed instead of bonderized/galvanized sheet steel for a restaurant sink?

The Code permits approved bonderized or galvanized sheet steel not less than No. 16 gauge for special‑use sinks (§ 406.2). Stainless steel is not listed in § 406.2, but § 406.3 allows other materials suited for the intended use for special‑use fixtures; using stainless would require AHJ approval if it’s not explicitly covered in a given subsection (§ 406.2–406.3) .

What gauge is the minimum for permitted sheet‑metal special‑use sinks?

Minimum is No. 16 U.S. gauge (0.0635 inches / 1.6 mm) as specified in § 406.2 .

If I choose a nonlisted material for a special‑use fixture, what should I do?

You must demonstrate the material is suited for the intended use and submit the proposal to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for approval (see the combined intent of § 406.1 and § 406.3) .

Does § 406.2 say how to brace sheet‑metal sinks?

§ 406.2 requires that sheet‑metal plumbing fixtures be adequately designed, constructed, and braced in an approved manner, but it does not provide prescriptive bracing details; design drawings and details should be provided to the AHJ for approval as required (§ 406.2) .
