1-19-1: ELECTION DATES:¶
A general Municipal election for the election of members of the Council, City Clerk and City Treasurer and for such other purposes as may be prescribed, shall be held in the City on the same day as the Statewide general election held in November of each even-numbered year. (Ord. 535, 2-17-1987)
1-19-2: COUNCIL TERMS:¶
Two (2) Council seats shall be voted upon the date of the Statewide general election in November, 1988, and thereafter every four (4) years. Three (3) Council seats shall be voted upon the date of the Statewide general election in November, 1990, and thereafter every four (4) years. The person having the highest number of votes, consistent with the number of seats up for election, shall be elected. The elected members of the Council shall hold office until their successors are elected or appointed and qualified. (Ord. 535, 2-17-1987)
1-19-3: CITY TREASURER; TERM:¶
The position of City Treasurer shall be voted upon the date of the Statewide general election in November, 1988, and thereafter every four (4) years. The person having the highest number of votes for the position of City Treasurer shall be elected. The City Treasurer shall hold office until their successor is elected or appointed and qualified. 1-19-4: EFFECTIVE DATE OF OFFICE:¶
Newly elected Council members and the City Treasurer shall assume the duties of their office commencing on the fourth Tuesday following the general Municipal election. (Ord. 558, 8-16-1988; amd. Ord. 850-22, 12-20-2022)
1-19-5: EXTENSION OF EXISTING TERMS OF OFFICE:¶
Pursuant to section 36503.5 of the Government Code and section 17088 of the Election Code, the following terms of office are extended as follows:
(A) Those Council members’ terms that expire on the third Tuesday following the general Municipal elections in November, 1988, are extended to the fourth Tuesday following the general Municipal election in November, 1988.
(B) Those Council members’ terms that expire on the third Tuesday following the general Municipal elections in November, 1990, are extended to the fourth Tuesday following the general Municipal election in November, 1990.
(C) The City Treasurer’s term that expires on the third Tuesday following the general Municipal election in November, 1988, is extended to the fourth Tuesday following the general Municipal election in November, 1988. (Ord. 558, 8-16-1988; amd. Ord. 850-22, 12-20-2022)
1-19-6: CITY CLERK:¶
The position of City Clerk shall be filled by a majority vote of the City Council of the City of Taft. The City Clerk shall serve at the pleasure of the City Council, but may be removed only by a majority vote of the entire City Council. The City Clerk shall keep the City Council informed on a regular basis, but shall report to and take direction from only the City Manager. The duties of the City Clerk shall be as required by State of California code and as defined by applicable City Council resolution. The person serving as City Clerk at the time the City of Taft’s electors approve the City Council to appoint the City Clerk shall continue to serve as City Clerk until such appointment by the City Council.
