Sec. 5-27.201. - Exterior doors.¶
(a) Exterior doors and doors leading from garage areas into single-family dwellings shall be of solid core pursuant to the specifications set forth in Chapter 33 of the Uniform Building Code, or with panels not less than nine-sixteenths ( 9/16 ″) inch thick.
(b) Exterior doors for single-family dwellings shall have deadbolts in addition to deadlocking latches. Locks for other occupancies shall be constructed such that both deadbolt and deadlocking latch can be retracted by a single action of the inside door knob. Alternate devices equally resistant to illegal entry may be substituted subject to prior approval of the enforcing authority. Double keyed, double cylinder dead bolt locks are not permitted.
(c) All main or front entry doors to dwelling units shall constructed so that the occupant has a view of the area immediately outside the door without opening the door. Except as provided otherwise in the Uniform Building Code, such view may be provided by a door viewer having a field of view of not less than 180 degrees through windows or through view ports.
(d) Vision panels in exterior doors or within reach of an inside activating device must be of burglary-resistant material or equivalent material approved by the enforcing authority.
(e) Glazing in exterior doors, or within forty (40″) inches of any locking device, shall be fully tempered glass or rated burglary resistant, including security film.
(f) Strike plate installation. In wood frame construction, any open space between trimmers and wood door jambs shall be solid shimmed by a single piece extending not less than six (6″) inches above and below the strike plate.
Strike plates shall be attached to wood with not less than two (2) No. 8 by two and one-half ( 21/2 ″) inch screws. Strike plates when attached to metal shall be attached with not less than two (2) No. 8 machine screws.
(g) All strike plates of doors in pairs shall be installed as recommended and designed by the manufacturer.
(h) Hinges which are exposed to the exterior shall be equipped with non-removable hinge pins or a mechanical interlock to preclude removal of the door from the exterior by removing the hinge pins.
(i) Locking hardware. Single swinging doors and the active leaf of doors in pairs shall be equipped with an approved exterior key-operating dead bolt which has been tested in accordance with U.B.C. Standard No. 41-1, Part I.
(j) On pairs of doors, the active leaf shall be secured with the type of lock required for single doors, in subsection (b) of this section. The inactive leaf shall be equipped with lever flush extension bolts or equivalent, protected by hardened material with a throw or three-fourths of this section (¾″) inch at head and foot. Multiple point locks, cylinder activated from the active leaf and satisfying the requirements above, may be used in lieu of flushbolts.
(k) Openings for delivery of mail will be allowed and those openings shall be no larger than twenty-four (24) square inches. These openings located within three (3′) feet of any locking device shall be so constructed to prohibit access to the interior door knob.

Sec. 5-27.202. - Sliding glass doors.¶
The following requirements must be met for sliding glass doors.
(a) All sliding patio doors, including the balcony doors, shall be adjusted in such a manner that the vertical play is taken up to prevent lifting with a pry tool to defeat the locking mechanism. Auxiliary locking devices shall be provided with the mounting screws for the lock cases being inaccessible from the outside. Lock or hood bolts shall be hardened steel or have hardened steel inserts. The lock or hood bolt shall engage the strike sufficiently to prevent it being disengaged by any possible movement of the door within the space or clearances necessary for installation and operation. The strike area shall be reinforced to maintain effectiveness of bolt strength. In addition to the primary locking device, auxiliary pin-type locking devices, preferably keyed, shall be provided.
(b) Double-sliding patio doors must be locked at the meeting rail and meet the locking requirements listed in subsection (a) of this section.

Sec. 5-27.203. - Windows.¶
Windows shall be constructed so that when the window is locked, it cannot be lifted from the frame and the sliding portion of a window shall be on the inside track. The vertical play shall be taken up to prevent lifting of the movable section to defeat the locking mechanism. All accessible windows that open shall be equipped with secondary locking devices.
(a) Window locking devices shall be capable of withstanding a force of three hundred pounds applied in any direction.
(b) Louvered glass windows shall not be used.
(c) Emergency escape or rescue windows. Bars, grilles, grates or similar devices may be installed in emergency escape or rescue windows or doors required by the Uniform Building Code provided:
(1) Such devices are equipped with release mechanisms approved by the enforcing authority which are openable from the inside without the use of a key or special knowledge or effort; and
(2) The building is equipped with smoke detectors installed in accordance with the Uniform Building Code.

Sec. 5-27.204. - Garage-type doors - solid overhead, rolling overhead, swing, sliding,…¶
The above described doors shall conform to the following standards.
(a) Wood doors shall have panels a minimum of five-sixteenths ( 5/16 ″) inch in thickness with the locking hardware being attached to the support framing.
(b) Overhead garage doors shall not have bottom vents except those doors having double louvered or shielded vents or approved alternate devices to protect the locking mechanism.
(c) Openings for delivery of mail will be allowed and those openings shall be no larger than twenty four (24) square inches. Openings located within three (3′) feet of any locking device shall be constructed to prohibit access to the interior locking device.
(d) Overhead and sliding garage doors shall be secured with a cylinder lock, padlock or equivalent when not otherwise locked by electric power operation. Doors utilizing a cylinder lock shall have a locking bar or bolt that extends into the receiving guide a minimum of one inch.
(e) Doors that exceed sixteen (16′) feet in width shall have two (2) lock receiving points, or, if the door does not exceed nineteen (19′) feet, a single bolt may be used if placed in the center of the door with the locking point located either at the floor or door frame header; or, torsion spring counter balance type hardware may be used.

Sec. 5-27.205. - Premises identification.¶
All residential dwellings shall display a street number in a prominent location on the street side of the residence in such a position that the number is easily visible to approaching emergency vehicles from the street. Street numbers shall be not less than three (3″) inches in height and illuminated.
