2.62.010 Parks and Recreation Commission established.¶
There is hereby established the Parks and Recreation Commission which, in addition to the duties and responsibilities enumerated herein and throughout the City’s municipal code, shall assume all duties and responsibilities previously assigned to the Coronado Street Tree Committee (“Street Tree Committee”). 2.62.020 Membership.¶
A. The Commission shall consist of no less than Jve members appointed by the City Council. Two members of the Commission are preferred to have a demonstrated interest, education, or professional experience in Jelds such as urban forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, landscape architecture and related disciplines, or the care and stewardship of public landscapes.
B. If at any time it should be deemed advisable and for the best interest of the City, the City Council may appoint additional members, not to exceed seven in all, to serve on the Commission.
C. The City Council shall appoint one member of the student body of the Coronado High School to sit with the Commission. The student representative shall provide input into parks and recreation issues but shall not have a vote and shall not be considered a Commissioner for quorum purposes. The student representative shall serve for a single term of one year, commencing on June 1st, and expiring on May 31st. (Ord. 2025-10 § 2 (Exh. A), 2025)
2.62.030 Meetings.¶
The regular meetings of the Parks and Recreation Commission shall be held in the City Council Chambers of City Hall at least once every two months on a day and at an hour speciJed by resolution of the Commission. (Ord. 2025-10 § 2 (Exh. A), 2025; Ord. 2044 § 1, 2014)
2.62.040 Duties.¶
A. The Commission shall investigate, evaluate, and recommend to the City Council policies, plans, and initiatives that promote and enhance recreational opportunities for the community.
B. The Commission shall advise the City Council and City Manager on the development, administration, and improvement of parks, recreational programs, facilities, amenities, and events.
C. The Commission shall assist in promoting public awareness of, and participation in, the City’s parks and recreation programs, events, and facilities, and shall encourage broad community involvement.
D. The Commission shall assist in the preparation of, and annually review and recommend updates to, the City’s long-range plans for parks and recreational facilities and programs.
E. The Commission shall periodically review the City’s approved tree list and master plans and make recommendations to the City Council regarding revisions. In doing so, the Commission shall consider factors including aesthetics, maintenance needs, and any other relevant criteria identiJed by the City. The Commission may make recommendations to the Council on any matters pertaining to trees along City streets and on public property.
F. The Commission shall review heritage tree requests and tree removal requests that have been referred to the Commission by the Director of Public Services and Engineering.
G. The Commission shall consider and provide recommendations on any matters referred to it by the City Council, and may, on its own initiative, submit recommendations to the Council on matters within its purview. (Ord. 2025-10 § 2 (Exh. A), 2025)
