2.10.010 - Findings.¶
In November of 2004, the residents of the city of Coachella approved Measure A, which amended the Coachella Municipal Code to make the office of mayor an elected office of the city with a term of two years.

2.10.020 - Purposes.¶
A. The city council intends by adding this chapter to ensure the complete and seamless transition of the office of mayor from an appointed to an elected position as required by the voters, and to ensure compliance with state and local laws.
B. The city council does not intend by this chapter to expand or restrict the scope of the office beyond what is provided under state law. (Gov. Code §§ 34900 et seq.)

2.10.030 - Eligibility.¶
To hold office as elected mayor, a person must, at the time he or she assumes office, be an elector of the city and a registered voter of the city at the time the nomination papers were issued to the candidate as set forth under state law. (Gov. Code § 34904.) If the residence of the mayor changes to a place outside the boundaries of the city, the office of the mayor shall become vacant.

2.10.040 - Term.¶
The elected mayor shall serve a term of two years.

2.10.050 - Duties and powers.¶
A. The mayor shall be the presiding officer at the meetings of the city council. If the mayor is absent or unable to act, the mayor pro tempore shall serve until the mayor returns or is able to act. The mayor pro tempore shall have all the powers and duties of the mayor. The mayor shall be the official head of the city for all ceremonial purposes.
B. For all other purposes, the mayor is a member of the city council and has all of the powers and duties of a member of the city council.

2.10.060 - Selection of mayor pro tempore.¶
A mayor pro tempore shall be chosen in the manner provided in Government Code section 36801.

2.10.070 - Vacancy.¶
In the case of a vacancy in the office of the mayor for any reason, the city council shall fill the vacancy by appointment. If the council fails to fill it within sixty (60) days, it shall call an election to fill the vacancy to be held on the next established election date to be held not less than one hundred fourteen (114) days thereafter. A person appointed or elected to fill a vacancy shall hold office for the unexpired term of the former incumbent. (Gov. Code § 34902 (a).)
