What listing, labeling and installation requirements apply to factory-built fireplaces and chimneys?
Factory-built fireplaces and chimneys must carry a listing/label and be installed exactly per that listing and the manufacturer’s instructions (for example, factory-built fireplaces tested to UL 127 and chimneys listed and marked as required). Follow the product’s listing for clearances, hearth extensions, doors, shrouds, offsets and insulation shields — the listing and the manufacturer control the installation.
Last reviewed: July 6, 2026
What the code requires — 2-4 sentences
Factory-built fireplaces and factory-built chimneys must be listed and labeled and installed exactly per their listing and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. The California Residential Code makes this explicit for factory-built fireplaces in § R1004.1 and for factory-built chimneys in § R1005.1. These listings also identify the required test standards (for example, UL 127 for factory-built fireplaces and specified UL standards for chimneys). § R1004.1 and § R1005.1
The single most important rule: install only factory-built fireplaces and chimneys that are listed and labeled and follow the exact conditions of that listing and the manufacturer’s installation instructions. § R1004.1 § R1005.1
Requirements in detail
Basic listing and labeling requirement
- A factory-built fireplace must be listed and labeled and installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing; factory-built fireplaces are tested in accordance with UL 127. § R1004.1
- A factory-built chimney must be listed and labeled and installed and terminated in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions (i.e., the conditions of the listing). § R1005.1
Additional, frequently applicable rules (decision-relevant items)
Use the table below to quickly decide which standard or limitation applies.
| Decision dimension / value | Requirement (plain English) | Code Reference |
|---|---|---|
| Listing & labeling required? | Yes — both fireplaces and chimneys must be listed and labeled and installed per listing/manufacturer instructions. | § R1004.1; § R1005.1 |
| Test standard — factory-built fireplaces | Must be tested in accordance with UL 127. | § R1004.1 |
| Hearth extension standard | Listed hearth extensions must comply with UL 1618 and be installed per the fireplace listing. | § R1004.2 |
| Gasketed fireplace doors | Prohibited unless the fireplace system has been specifically tested, listed and labeled for gasketed doors (UL 127 test). | § R1004.5 |
| Decorative shrouds at termination | Not allowed unless the shroud is listed and labeled for that specific factory-built system and installed per manufacturer instructions. | § R1004.3; § R1005.2 |
| Chimney use with solid-fuel appliances | Chimneys for solid fuel in dwelling units must meet Type HT requirements of UL 103 and be marked “Type HT” and “Residential Type and Building Heating Appliance Chimney.” | § R1005.3 |
| Chimneys for factory-built fireplaces | Chimneys used with factory-built fireplaces must comply with UL 127. | § R1005.4 |
| Medium-heat appliances (>1,000°F at chimney entrance) | Chimneys serving these appliances must comply with UL 959. Threshold = >1,000°F (538°C) measured at chimney entrance. | § R1005.6 |
| Chimney offsets / elbows | No part of the chimney may be angled more than 30° from vertical; the assembly may not include more than four elbows. | § R1005.7; § R1005.9 |
| Insulation shield through insulated assemblies | Where a factory-built chimney passes through insulation, install an insulation shield of steel ≥ 0.0187 inch (No. 26 gauge); maintain the manufacturer-specified clearance to combustibles; where passing through attic insulation shield must end ≥ 2 inches above insulation. | § R1005.8 |
Notes on the table:
- The listing / label is authoritative: it typically contains clear clearance-to-combustible dimensions, hearth requirements, termination caps allowed, and other system-specific installation limits — follow the listing and manufacturer instructions exactly rather than guessing from generic values. § R1004.1 § R1005.1
Installation control points to check on every job
- Verify the appliance or fireplace has a label showing the listing and the UL standard (e.g., UL 127). § R1004.1
- Confirm the chimney listing and applicable UL standard (UL 103, UL 959, UL 2561 as referenced in related mechanical code sections) and required marking (for Type HT). § R1005.1; § R1005.3
- Follow manufacturer’s instructions for clearances, hearth extension installation, exterior combustion air components (if listed), termination components, and any required insulation shields. § R1004.2; § R1006.1.1
Exceptions & special cases
- Gasketed doors: A gasketed fireplace door is normally prohibited on factory-built fireplaces unless the entire fireplace system (including the door assembly) has been specifically tested, listed and labeled for that configuration in accordance with UL 127. § R1004.5
- Decorative shrouds: Allowed only when the shroud itself is listed and labeled for use with that specific factory-built fireplace or chimney system, and then must be installed per the manufacturer. § R1004.3; § R1005.2
- Solid-fuel appliances: Chimney requirements are stricter for solid-fuel appliances — chimneys in dwelling units must meet Type HT of UL 103 and be appropriately marked. § R1005.3
If a specific installation detail is not covered by the fireplace or chimney manufacturer’s instructions, the code’s fallback limits (e.g., 30° offset max or four elbows) apply per § R1005.7 / R1005.9.
Common mistakes
- Installing an unlisted or unlabeled component and assuming “close enough” compliance — the code requires listed and labeled systems; the label and listing control. § R1004.1; § R1005.1
- Adding aftermarket parts (gasketed doors, decorative shrouds, termination caps) that are not listed for that specific system, or installing them contrary to the system listing. § R1004.5; § R1004.3; § R1005.2
- Ignoring the listing’s specified clearances to combustibles and instead using typical or assumed clearances — the listing may be more or less restrictive than another product. § R1004.1
- Over‑offsetting chimneys or using too many elbows (more than four elbows or angles > 30°). § R1005.7; § R1005.9
Worked example — concrete scenario
Scenario: You are installing a factory-built wood-burning fireplace (listed system) in a California dwelling. The job requires running a factory-built chimney to the roof with one offset.
Steps and code checks:
- Confirm the fireplace unit is listed and labeled and tested to UL 127 (look on the fireplace label). This is required by § R1004.1.
- Check the manufacturer’s installation instructions and the listing for the required hearth extension. If a listed hearth extension is provided, it must comply with UL 1618 and be installed per the listing. § R1004.2
- Chimney selection: because this is a factory-built fireplace, the chimney must comply with UL 127 for chimneys serving factory-built fireplaces (see § R1005.4) and be listed and labeled for that appliance; install and terminate per the chimney manufacturer’s instructions and the chimney listing. § R1005.1; § R1005.4
- Offsets: if the chimney includes a single offset, ensure that no part of the chimney is angled more than 30° from vertical. If your offset piece is 25°, it is acceptable; a 45° elbow would violate § R1005.7. Also verify you will not exceed four elbows in the assembly. § R1005.7
- Insulation shield: if the chimney passes through insulated attic space, install the manufacturer-prescribed insulation shield or, where an independent shield is required, use steel ≥ 0.0187 inch (No. 26 gauge) and terminate it at least 2 inches above the insulation. § R1005.8
If all of the above checks pass and the installation is per the listing/instructions, the installation meets the listing/labeling requirements in § R1004.1 and § R1005.1.
Related provisions
- § R1004.2 — Hearth extensions; listed hearth extensions and UL 1618.
- § R1004.3 — Decorative shrouds for factory-built fireplaces (listed & labeled requirement).
- § R1004.5 — Gasketed fireplace doors restriction unless system tested/listed.

- § R1005.6 — Medium‑heat appliance chimney requirements (UL 959; threshold > 1,000°F).
- § R1005.7 / § R1005.9 — Chimney offsets: max 30° and no more than four elbows.
- § R1005.8 — Insulation shield thickness 0.0187 in (No. 26 gage) and attic termination ≥ 2 in above insulation.
- § R1006.1.1 — Exterior combustion air ducts for factory-built fireplaces: must be a listed component and installed per manufacturer instructions.
(If you need the exact label wording, the listing report, or the manufacturer’s installation manual, obtain the product’s listing document and the installation instructions; the code requires following those documents verbatim. § R1004.1; § R1005.1.)

Frequently asked questions
Can I install any aftermarket decorative cap or shroud on a listed factory-built chimney?
No — decorative shrouds at the termination are prohibited unless the shroud is listed and labeled for use with that specific factory-built chimney system and installed per the manufacturer’s instructions. § R1005.2
Is a gasketed (sealed) door allowed on a factory-built fireplace?
Not unless the entire fireplace system (including the door configuration) has been specifically tested, listed and labeled for gasketed doors in accordance with UL 127. § R1004.5
What if my chimney needs multiple offsets to avoid structure conflicts?
Each part of the chimney must stay within 30° of vertical, and the assembly may include no more than four elbows; if manufacturer instructions address offsets, follow them; if not, these limits apply. § R1005.7; § R1005.9
Are factory-built chimneys for wood stoves different than for factory-built fireplaces?
Yes — chimneys for certain appliances (solid-fuel, medium-heat) have different UL requirements (e.g., Type HT / UL 103 for solid fuel; UL 959 for medium-heat >1,000°F). Confirm the chimney is listed for the specific appliance and marked as required. § R1005.3; § R1005.6
Who controls clearance requirements — the code or the manufacturer?
The code requires that factory-built systems be installed in accordance with the conditions of the listing; the manufacturer's listing/installation instructions (the listing) control the exact clearance and related installation details for that product. § R1004.1; § R1005.1
