2.12.010 - Appointment.¶
The city attorney shall be appointed by the city council and shall hold office during the pleasure of the city council, and until his successor is appointed and qualified; provided, that no person shall be eligible for the office of city attorney unless he has been admitted to practice law in the supreme court of the state.

2.12.020 - Duties.¶
A. It is the duty of the city attorney to advise the officers and authorities of the city in all legal matters pertaining to the business of the city; to prosecute violations of the Redding Municipal Code or other ordinances or noncompliance therewith; to represent the city in suits in which it may be a party, or may be in anyway interested; and to perform such other or additional duties as may be hereinafter provided by law. The city attorney shall have the power to employ, discipline, or remove any attorneys and other personnel assigned as subordinate to the city attorney.
B. Notwithstanding subdivision (A) of this section, the Shasta County District Attorney shall have concurrent jurisdiction to prosecute all violations of the Redding Municipal Code and to file civil suit as may be necessary to enforce compliance with the Redding Municipal Code.

2.12.030 - Contracts for special services.¶
The city attorney may enter into contracts for special legal and expert services to represent the city in connection with pending or threatened litigation if the persons providing the services are specially trained, experienced and competent to perform the special services required.
