2.280.010 - Created—Direction.¶
There is created a functional unit of city government known as the fire department, under the general administration of the city manager, which shall be under the direction and control of the fire chief.

2.280.020 - Department functions.¶
The department shall:
A. Perform all duties relating to the prevention and extinguishing of fires;
B. Inspect appropriate occupancies and premises in relation to fire prevention and safety standards and, as directed by the city manager, in accordance with the requirements of the housing code;
C. Enforce all state and local laws, regulations and ordinances relating to the prevention and extinguishing of fires and the storage of combustibles, explosives and hazardous materials;
D. Formulate standards for the operation and maintenance of fire alarm systems;
E. Render staff services and provide professional and technical advice to the city manager relating to civil defense and disaster preparedness programs, and coordinate civil disaster and mutual aid activities in accordance with approved plans and agreements;
F. Conduct or sponsor training programs for city officers and employees, civil defense volunteers and community organizations dealing with civil defense and disaster preparedness;
G. Provide basic and advanced life support and emergency ambulance service within the city and to areas under contract with the city;
H. Perform such other related duties as shall be required by law, ordinance or the city manager.
