Chapter 8.32 — INDUSTRIAL HAMMERS

§ 8.32.010. Defined.

Industrial hammer. Smith-forging or open-frame forging, consisting of hammering metal with or between open-faced dies, and drop-forging, consisting of hammering metal with or between closed impression dies, and all kinds and types of hammers designed or used for industrial, fabricating or manufacturing purposes wherein the source of power utilized to raise or lower the ram of such hammer is steam, compressed air, mechanical or manual. § 8.32.020. Installation generally.

All industrial hammers hereafter installed in the City shall conform in all respects to the provisions and requirements of this chapter. (Prior code § 25-2)

§ 8.32.030. Mounting.

  • A. Requirements Generally. Industrial hammers shall be mounted and supported on a vibration absorbing mounting utilizing coil springs, heavy rubber blocks or equivalent resilient media interposed between such industrial hammer and the foundation thereof, in order to prevent the transmission of heavy machine vibrations to the earth.

  • B. Certification of Design. Before submission of the design for the foundation and mounting of industrial hammers to the City Engineer, the adequacy of such design to prevent the transmission of heavy vibrations to the earth shall be certified by an engineer registered as a mechanical engineer by the State Board of Registration for Civil and Professional Engineers.

  • C. Approval of Plans. Upon the certification described in the preceding section, the plans and design for the foundation and mounting of each industrial hammer shall be submitted to the City Engineer for his or her approval. No industrial hammer shall be installed in the City unless and until such plans and design have been approved by the City Engineer.

§ 8.32.040. Enclosures.

Industrial hammers hereafter installed in the City shall be enclosed within a roofed and sided building. All openings into such building, other than those necessary for ventilation, shall be closed during the operation of any industrial hammer within such building. The maximum area of the aggregate of such openings for ventilation purposes in any room housing such hammer or hammers within any building shall not exceed one-eighth of the floor area of such room.
