15.16.010 - Compliance with provisions required.

It shall be unlawful to erect, construct or maintain any outdoor advertising structure or sign of any nature, except as hereinafter provided, upon any building, lot or parcel of land inside the limits of the City of Huron.

15.16.020 - Exceptions.

The foregoing prohibition shall not apply to advertising which is incidental and subordinate to a lawful use of the premises on which it is located, including signs advertising services rendered or goods sold on the premises on which it is located.

The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to the erection, construction or maintenance of directional, warning or information structures or signs required or authorized by law or by federal, State or municipal authority.

15.16.030 - Erection, construction and maintenance restrictions.

It shall constitute a violation of this chapter for any person, firm or corporation to erect, construct or maintain any outdoor advertising structure or sign of any nature indicating the trade name, merchandise or service of any person or corporation who pays a consideration for the privilege of placing, maintaining or using any portion of the sign or painted advertising, to the owner or occupant of the premises on which it is located; provided, however, that the prohibition contained in this section shall not prohibit the erection, construction or maintenance of signs not exceeding twenty (20) square feet in area.

15.16.040 - Existing signs required to comply.

Within one (1) year from the effective date of the ordinance codified in this chapter all advertising signs and displays which are in conflict with the provisions of this chapter shall be removed, or, where possible, made to comply with the provisions hereof.

15.16.050 - Violation—Public nuisance.

The erection, construction or maintenance of any advertising sign or display in conflict with the provisions of this chapter is declared by the city council of the City of Huron to constitute a public nuisance.

15.16.060 - Violation—Penalty.

Any person, firm or corporation violating or failing, neglecting or refusing to comply with any of the provisions of this chapter shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine not exceeding five hundred dollars ($500.00) or by imprisonment for not more than six (6) months.
