Article X — POSTING OF STREET NUMBERS

Sec. 5-236. - Enforcement.¶
The building and safety director, along with the Central Valley Fire District, shall be responsible for enforcing the provisions of this article.

Sec. 5-237. - Street number maps adopted by reference.¶
There is hereby adopted a street number index map and sectional street number district maps which are on file with the planning department of the city and are made part of this article by reference. Maps showing the streets hereafter constructed within the city or streets in areas hereafter annexed to the city shall be added to such map from time to time and the street numbers shall be indicated thereon, and upon filing with the planning department such maps shall constitute a part of the street number maps.

Sec. 5-238. - Designation of numbers.¶
Street numbers shall be designated and assigned by the planning department or other agencies in cooperation with the planning department as approved by the planning director.

Sec. 5-239 - Street, address numbers.¶
Buildings, apartment units, condominium units, suites, tenant spaces, and similar other units or spaces shall have approved street numbers, address numbers, building numbers, or approved building identification.
All street numbers, address numbers, building numbers, and unit/tenant identification numbers posted pursuant to Section 501.2 of the California Building Code and section 5-239 of the Fontana Municipal Code shall meet the following requirements:
(1)
All street numbers, address numbers, building numbers, and unit/tenant identification numbers shall be:
a.
Arabic numerals or alphabet letters; and
b.
Of a contrasting color to the background to which they are attached; and
c.
Not less than four inches (102 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of 0.5 inches (12.7 mm); and
d.
If there is more than one building on a lot and only one number is assigned, the number shall be posted on the principal building or the building nearest the street; and
e.
Placed in a prominent position that is plainly legible and visible from the street on which the building fronts.
(2)
New residential dwelling units, other than multifamily dwelling units, shall, in addition to the requirements of section 5-239(1) of the Fontana Municipal Code, be posted with address numbers that are:
a.
Internally electrically illuminated so as to be visible during the hours of darkness; and
b.
Where building setbacks exceed 100 feet (30.5 m) from the street or would otherwise be obstructed, additional numbers shall be displayed on an independent structure, such as a post, at the property entrance. These additional numbers are not required to be illuminated, but shall otherwise meet the requirements of this section.
(3)
New multifamily, commercial, industrial, and other non-residential use buildings less than 100,000 square feet (9290 m 2 ) in area shall, in addition to the requirements of section 5-239(1) of the Fontana Municipal Code, be posted with address numbers that are:
a.
Not less than eight inches (204 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of one inch (25.5 mm); and
b.
Electrically illuminated so as to be visible during the hours of darkness; and
c.
Where building setbacks exceed 200 feet (61 m) from the street, or the numbers on the building would not be visible or would otherwise be obstructed, additional numbers shall be displayed on an independent structure, at the property entrance. These additional numbers shall not be less than six inches (153 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of 0.75 inches (19 mm) and shall otherwise meet the requirements of this section.
(4)
New multifamily, commercial, industrial, and other non-residential use buildings 100,000 square feet (9290 m 2 ) or larger in area shall, in addition to the requirements of section 5-239(1) of the Fontana Municipal Code, be posted with address numbers that are:
a.
Not less than 12 inches (306 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of 1.5 inch (38 mm); and
b.
Electrically illuminated so as to be visible during the hours of darkness; and
c.
Where building setbacks exceed 200 feet (61 m) from the street, or the numbers on the building would not be visible or would otherwise be obstructed, additional numbers shall be displayed on an independent structure, at the property entrance. These additional numbers shall not be less than six inches (153 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of 0.75 inches (19 mm) and shall otherwise meet the requirements of this section.
(5)
All new multiple dwelling unit complexes of five or more units shall be provided with an illuminated directory at each entry, clearly visible and within the setback area. The directory shall at a minimum consist of a diagrammatic representation of the complex which shows the location of the viewer and the unit designations within the complex.
(6)
All individual residential units and/or tenant/lease spaces in a new multifamily, commercial, or industrial building shall be posted with identification numbers, not less than three inches in height, that are electrically illuminated and easily visible to approaching vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic.
(7)
All commercial and industrial buildings must display, on the roof, the address of the building. If the building is subdivided into a multi-use with a common roof, each use must be identified with a number, letter, or its individual address. The address numbers shall not be less than 36 inches (914 mm) in height, with a minimum stroke width of 1.5 inch (38 mm).
(8)
Any business which affords vehicular access to the rear through any driveway, alleyway, or parking lot shall also display the same numbers on the rear of the building.

Sec. 5-240. - Responsibility for placement of numbers.¶
The appropriate numbers shall be affixed to the respective building within five days after the receipt by the owner, occupant, lessee, tenant or subtenant of the building of a notice of the street numbers designated for such building. All numbers other than the numbers provided for in this article shall be removed from the building by the owners, occupants, lessees, tenants or subtenants within five days from the service of the notice designating the appropriate numbers to be placed thereon.

Sec. 5-241. - Size and location of numbers.¶
All street numbers posted pursuant to this article shall meet the requirements contained in section 5-239 of the Fontana Municipal Code.

Sec. 5-242. - Display of numbers prerequisite to issuance of business license.¶
No business license shall be issued to any person unless the premises upon which such business is conducted are numbered in the manner required by this article and the street numbers are displayed in the manner provided in this article.
