6.24.010 - Suspicion of rabies—Confinement and examination of captured dog.

Officers or persons capturing a dog under the provisions of Section 6.04.010 which they suspect is infected with rabies may separately confine said dog in some safe place, report the capture to the health officer and submit such dog to the examination of the health officer or his representative. It shall be the duty of the health officer, when called upon, to examine or have examined such dog, and to ascertain whether or not such dog is infected with rabies.

6.24.020 - Suspicion of rabies—Duty to report.

Whenever the owner or person having the custody or possession of an animal observes or learns that such animal shows symptoms of rabies, or acts in a manner which would lead to a reasonable suspicion that it may have rabies, such owner or person having the custody or possession of the animal shall immediately notify the health officer or his representative to make an inspection or examination of the animal until it is established to the satisfaction of said official that such animal has or has not rabies.

6.24.030 - Right to enter premises to examine dogs.

The health officer or his representative, the dogcatcher and the police officers of the city are authorized and empowered to enter upon private property for the purpose of ascertaining whether any dog kept or harbored thereon is afflicted with rabies.

6.24.040 - Dogs biting persons.

Whenever it is shown that any dog has bitten any person, the owner or person having the custody or possession thereof shall, upon order of the health officer, quarantine it and keep it tied up or confined for a period of not less than fourteen days, and shall allow the health officer or other official of the department of health to make an inspection or examination thereof at any time during said period.

6.24.050 - Bitten animal or person.

Whenever any animal or person is bitten by an animal having or suspected of having rabies, the owner or person having the custody or possession of the bitten animal, or the person so bitten, shall immediately notify the health officer and shall quarantine it.

6.24.060 - Destruction or quarantine of bitten animal.

The health officer or his representative shall have power, in his discretion, to kill or quarantine any animal so bitten, in case the owner or person having custody or possession thereof fails to do so immediately, or in case the owner or person having the custody or possession thereof is not readily accessible.

6.24.070 - Destruction of rabid animals.

If it appears to the health officer or his representative that a dog or other animal has rabies, he shall kill and destroy such animal forthwith.

6.24.080 - Bringing dog from rabies-infected area.

No person shall bring a dog into the city from any city or county in which rabies is present, or which has been quarantined for rabies within two months.
