SECTION 3103C—MEDICAL RADIOGRAPHIC AND PHOTOFLUOROGRAPHIC INSTALLATIONS
3103C.1 Operator station. The operator’s station at the control shall be behind a protective barrier either in a separate room, in a protected booth or behind a shield which will intercept the useful beam and any radiation which has been scattered only once.
3103C.2 Patient observation and communication. Provision shall be made for the operator to observe and communicate with the patient without leaving the shielded position at the control panel. When an observation window is used, it must provide radiation atten- uation equal to that required in the surrounding barrier.
SECTION 3104C—MEDICAL THERAPEUTIC X-RAY INSTALLATIONS
3104C.1 General. All wall, floor and ceiling areas that can be struck by the useful beam, plus a border of 1 foot (305 mm), shall be provided with primary protective barriers.
3104C.2 Equipment operating above 50 kVp. Equipment operating above 50 kVp shall conform with the following: 1. The control station shielding shall either be an integral part of the building or anchored to the building. 2. The control station shall be provided with a window having radiation attenuation equal to that required by the adjacent barrier, or a mirror system, or a closed-circuit television viewing screen. The patient area must be visible to the operator with- out having to leave the protected area during exposure.

a. For framing of other species: (1) Find specific gravity for species of lumber in ANSI/AWC NDS. (2) For staples find shear value from table for Structural I panels (regardless of
actual grade) and multiply value by 0.82 for species with specific gravity of 0.42 or greater, or 0.65 for all other species.
b. Space fasteners maximum 12 inches on center along intermediate framing members (6 inches on center where supports are spaced 48 inches on center).
c. Framing at adjoining panel edges shall be 3 inches nominal or wider.
d. Staples shall have a minimum crown width of7/16 inch and shall be installed with their crowns parallel to the long dimension of the framing members.
e. The minimum nominal width of framing members not located at boundaries or adjoining panel edges shall be 2 inches.
f. For shear loads of normal or permanent load duration as defined by the ANSI/AWC NDS, the values in the table shall be multiplied by 0.63 or 0.56, respectively.

The tabulated values apply only to conditions where the topographic factor (Kzt) determined in accordance with Chapter 26 of ASCE 7 is 1.0 or where_Kzt_ is incorporated in the
basic wind speed in Section 1609.
f. For Exposure D, add 8 inches (203 mm) to the parapet height required for Exposure C and the parapet height shall not be less than 12 inches (305 mm).|For SI: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 foot = 304.8 mm, 1 mile per hour = 0.447 m/s.
a. Parapet height is measured vertically from the top surface of the coping down to the surface of the roof covering in the field of the roof adjacent to the parapet and outbound

Frequently asked questions
Who decides whether I can deviate from the NCRP shielding requirements cited in the CRSC?
Only the Department of Health Services may grant a variance or exception to the CRSC shielding standards referenced by the CBC (see § 3102C).
Which NCRP report do I use for a dental intraoral X‑ray room?
Sec. 12‑31C‑101 requires compliance with NCRP Report No. 35 for dental X‑ray protection. You must use the mandatory parts and appendices of Report No. 35.
If my project uses a medical accelerator, which report applies?
For particle accelerators (0.1–100 MeV) the CRSC references NCRP Report No. 51 in § 12‑31C‑101; use that report’s mandatory standards and appendices for shielding design.
Does the CBC contain numeric shielding tables so I can skip the NCRP reports?
No. § 3102C of the CBC directs you to Sec. 12‑31C‑101 of the CRSC, which in turn requires using the NCRP reports. The CBC itself does not provide the NCRP numeric tables.
Do I need to cite the exact NCRP appendix or table in my submittal?
Yes — the CRSC requires compliance with the mandatory standards and appendices in the NCRP reports (see § 12‑31C‑101), so your design documentation should cite the specific report, section and appendix/table used.
