How are definitions organized alphabetically and by section groups?
The CMC lists definitions alphabetically by the term’s first word and groups them under letter headings (for example, the A block at § 203.0). To find a definition, go to the letter matching the first word and scan the alphabetical list there; ordinary words are not redefined unless the code says so (see § 201.1).

What the code requires — 2-4 sentences
The California Mechanical Code requires that the chapter of defined terms be organized so that the definitions of terms are arranged alphabetically according to the first word of the term — this is the governing rule in § 202.1 of the CMC. The chapter is then presented in letter-group sections (for example, § 203.0 — A — contains all entries that begin with the letter A) so a user looks to the letter heading and then to the alphabetical listing under that heading. See § 202.1 and the start of the A‑group at § 203.0 for the controlling layout language.
The most important rule: look up a defined term by the term’s first word — definitions are listed alphabetically by the first word and collected under letter headings (A, B, C …).
Requirements in detail
Basic organization
- The definitions chapter header and applicability language appear in § 201.0 / § 201.1 (general applicability to the code). The explicit rule about ordering is in § 202.1: alphabetical according to the first word of the term. The actual letter group headings (for example – A –) start at § 203.0 and contain the entries beginning with that letter.
- Practically that means:
- Find the letter heading for the initial letter of the term (A, B, C …) — e.g., § 203.0 — A — contains “Absorption Unit,” “Access Panel,” “Accessible,” etc.
- Within the letter block, entries are sorted alphabetically by the term’s first word (not by subsequent words, punctuation, or the intent of the phrase).
Entry format and display conventions
- Each definition entry shows the term followed by its definition text; many entries include bracketed references to other standards. Example entries under the A block in § 203.0 show this format (e.g., Absorption Unit, Access Panel, Accessible).
- Commas and parenthetical modifiers are part of the entry text (e.g., Air, Class 1) — the “first word” rule still applies (such entries will be located under the letter “A”).

Practical indexing notes (from the code structure)
- Letter headers (e.g., – A –) act as primary navigational anchors in Chapter 2; the listing under each header flows in alphabetical order by first word.
- Multi‑word terms are not reindexed by their second word (so “Air, Conditioned” and “Conditioned Air” are not the same lookup — use the entry’s first word).
Exceptions & special cases
- Ordinary common‑use words are intentionally left undefined when the ordinary dictionary meaning suffices — the CMC states no attempt is made to define ordinary words unless necessary; see § 201.1.
- The retrieved copy of the CMC that we used clearly shows the alphabetical rule at § 202.1 and the A‑group at § 203.0, and shows the applicability language in § 201.1. The retrieved CMC text does not, in the snippets shown to me, explicitly reproduce a § 201.3 text about terms defined in other codes. (Several other California codes do include a § 201.3 that says terms defined in other California codes take those meanings; that language is present in the Fire Code and other titles in the files provided, but the CMC snippet I used does not show an explicit § 201.3 entry.) Common mistakes
- Sorting by the second word (for example, treating “Air, Conditioned” as under “Conditioned”) — the CMC requires sorting by the first word.
- Overlooking letter headings — users sometimes flip straight to a random page instead of going to the letter block that matches the term’s first word (e.g., missing § 203.0 — A —).
- Ignoring punctuation or small modifiers — entries like Air, Class 1 are listed under “A”; do not search under “Class.”
- Assuming every commonly used word is defined — the code explicitly does not redefine ordinary dictionary words unless necessary (see § 201.1).
Worked example — concrete scenario applying the rule with numbers
Scenario: you need to find these three terms in the CMC definitions:
- Absorption Unit
- Access Panel
- Air, Class 1
Step 1 — determine the first word of each term:
- Term 1 first word = Absorption
- Term 2 first word = Access
- Term 3 first word = Air
Step 2 — go to the letter block for “A” (the A block is started at § 203.0 — A —).
Step 3 — within the A block, sort alphabetically by the first word:

201.1 Applicability. For the purpose of this code, the following terms have the meanings indicated in this chapter.
No attempt is made to define ordinary words, which are used in accordance with their established dictionary meanings, except where a word has been used loosely, and it is necessary to define its meaning as used in this code to avoid misunderstanding.

Absorption Unit. An absorption refrigeration system that has been factory-assembled and tested prior to its installation.
Accepted Engineering Practice. That which conforms to technical or scientific-based principles, test, or standards that are accepted by the engineering profession.
Access Panel. A closure device used to cover an opening into a duct, an enclosure, equipment, or an appurtenance.

Accessible. Where applied to a device, appliance, or equipment, “accessible” means having access thereto, but which first may require the removal of an access panel, door, or similar obstruction.
Accessible, Readily. Having a direct access without the necessity of removing a panel, door, or similar obstruction.
Accessory Dwelling Unit. [HCD 1 & HCD 2] An attached or detached residential dwelling unit that provides complete independent living facilities for one or more persons and is located on a lot with a proposed or existing primary residence. Accessory dwelling units shall include permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking, and sanitation on the same parcel as the single-family or multifamily dwelling is or will be situated. (See Government Code Section 65852.2.)
Air, Class 1. Air with low contaminant concentration, low sensory-irritation intensity, and inoffensive odor. [ASHRAE 62.1:5.18.1]
Air, Class 2. Air with moderate contaminant concentration, mild sensory-irritation intensity, or mildly offensive odors. Class 2 air also includes air that is not necessarily harmful or objectionable, but that is inappropriate for transfer or recirculation to spaces used for different purposes. [ASHRAE 62.1:5.18.1]
Air, Class 3. Air with significant contaminant concentration, significant sensory-irritation intensity, or offensive odor.

Air Gap, Water Distribution. The unobstructed vertical distance through the free atmosphere between the lowest opening from a pipe or faucet conveying potable water to the flood-level rim of a tank, vat, or fixture.
Alternate Water Source. Nonpotable source of water that includes but not limited to gray water, on-site treated nonpotable water, on-site treated nonpotable gray water, rainwater, and reclaimed (recycled) water. Anchors. Chapter 1 establishes the limits of applicability of the code and describes how the code is to be applied and enforced. The provisions of Chapter 1 establish the authority and duties of the code official appointed by the authority having jurisdiction and also establish the rights and privileges of the design professional, contractor and property owner.
Chapter 2 Definitions.
Chapter 2 is the repository of the definitions of terms used in the body of the code. The user of the code should be familiar with and consult this chapter because the definitions are essential to the correct interpretation of the code and because the user may not be aware that a term is defined.

Chapter 3 Occupancy Classification and Use.
Chapter 3 provides for the classification of buildings, structures and parts thereof based on the purpose for which they are used. Section 302 identifies the groups into which all buildings, structures and parts thereof must be classified. Sections 303 through 312 identify the occupancy characteristics of each group classification. In some sections, specific group classifications having requirements in common are collectively organized such that one term applies to all. For example, Groups A-1, A-2, A-3, A-4 and A-5 are individual groups for assembly-type buildings. The general term “Group A,” however, includes each of these individual groups. Other groups include Business (B), Organized Camps (C), Educational (E), Factory (F-1, F-2), High Hazard (H-1, H-2, H-3, H-4, H-5), Institutional (I-2, I-3, I-4), Laboratories (L), Mercantile (M), Residential (R-1, R-2, R-2.1, R-2.2, R-3, R-3.1, R-4), Storage (S-1, S-2) and Utility (U). Chapter 3 Occupancy Classification and Use.

Defining the use of the buildings is very important as it sets the tone for the remaining chapters of the code. Occupancy works with the height, area and construction type requirements in Chapters 5 and 6, to determine "equivalent risk." The determination of equivalent risk involves three interdependent considerations: (1) the level of fire hazard associated with the specific occupancy of the facility; (2) the reduction of fire hazard based on the fuel load by limiting the floor area and the height of the building; and (3) the level of overall fire resistance provided by the type of construction. The greater the potential fire hazards indicated as a function of the group, the lesser the height and area allowances for a particular construction type.
Occupancy classification also plays a key part in the appropriate protection measures. As such, threshold requirements for fire protection and means of egress systems are based on occupancy classification (see Chapters 9 and 10). Other sections of the code also contain requirements respective to the classification of building groups. For example, Section 706 specifies requirements for fire wall fire-resistance ratings that are tied to the occupancy classification of a building and Section 803.11 contains interior finish requirements that are dependent upon the occupancy classification. The use of the space, rather than the occupancy of the building, is utilized for determining occupant loading (Section 1004) and live loading (Section 1607).
Chapter 4 Special Detailed Requirements Based on Occupancy and Use.
Chapter 4 contains the requirements for protecting special uses and occupancies which are supplemental to the remainder of the code. For example, the height and area limitations established in Chapter 5 apply to all special occupancies unless Chapter 4 contains height and area limitations. In this case, the limitations in Chapter 4 supersede those in other sections. An example of this is the height and area limitations for open parking garages given in Section 406.5.4, which supersede the limitations given in Sections 504 and 506.

1224.3 Definitions. Specific terms and definitions are provided to facilitate consistency in the interpretation and application of these requirements. Some of these terms may have a broader definition in other contexts, but the definitions provided here reflect the use of the terms for OSHPD requirements.
AIR CONDITIONING. The process or system by which simultaneously the temperature, humidity, air motion and quality are maintained within required limits.
AIRBORNE INFECTION ISOLATION ROOM. A single-occupancy patient room where environmental factors are controlled in an effort to minimize the transmission of those infectious agents usually spread from person to person by droplet nuclei associated with coughing and inhalation.
AMBULATORY CARE. A defined health care encounter(s) of less than 24 hours in duration that requires direct professional health care support within a specific facility.
AMBULATORY SURGICAL FACILITY. Any surgical facility organized for the purpose of providing procedural, invasive surgical care to patients with the expectation that they will be recovered sufficiently to be discharged in less than a 24-hour period.
ANGIOGRAPHY. The radiographic visualization of blood vessels following introduction of contrast material for purposes of diagnosis.
BASIC SERVICES. Those essential services required for licensure as a hospital, including medical, nursing, surgical, anesthesia, labora- tory, radiology, pharmacy, dietary services and support services. See “SUPPLEMENTAL SERVICES.”
BIOTERRORISM. The use or threat of use, of biological agents to intimidate a political entity or population group.
CENTRAL AIR-HANDLING SYSTEMS. Any units requiring ductwork on the supply or inlet side and serving more than one room.
CHANGE IN FUNCTION. A change in function is a change in activity, service or licensed service provided, within the project limits, that does not necessarily change the use, specific use and/or occupancy. Conversion of a space that results in a change in activity such that the space will be required to satisfy the functional requirements under a different code sub-section than that of the prior use is consid- ered a change in function.
CLEAR DIMENSION. An unobstructed room dimension exclusive of built-in casework and equipment and available for functional use.
COURT. An open exterior space bounded on three or more sides by the walls of a structure.
ENVIRONMENT OF CARE. Those features in a built health care entity that are created, structured and maintained to support quality health care.
EXAM ROOM. A room with a bed, stretcher or examination table and capability for periodic monitoring (e.g., measurement of blood pres- sure or pulse oximetry) in which procedures that do not require a specialized suite can be performed (e.g., pelvic examination, blood transfusion).
FLOOR AREA, CLEAR. The actual occupied area exclusive of fixed or wall-mounted cabinets, fixed beds and furnishings, built-in shelves, toilet rooms, closets, lockers, wardrobes, alcoves, anterooms or vestibules.
GENERAL ACUTE-CARE HOSPITAL. A hospital, licensed by the California Department of Public Health, having a duly constituted govern- ing body with overall administrative and professional responsibility and an organized medical staff which provides 24-hour inpatient care, including the basic services.

[BG] 24-HOUR BASIS. The actual time that a person is an occupant within a facility for the purpose of receiving care. It shall not include a facility that is open for 24 hours and is capable of providing care to someone visiting the facility during any segment of the 24 hours.
3D PRINTER. A machine used in the additive manufacturing process for fabricating objects through the deposition of a material using a print head, nozzle or other printer technology.
[M] ACCESS (TO). That which enables a device, appliance or equipment to be reached by ready access or by a means that first requires the removal or movement of a panel or similar obstruction [see also “Ready access (to)”].
[BE] ACCESSIBLE MEANS OF EGRESS. A continuous and unobstructed way of egress travel from any accessible point in a building or facility to a public way.
[BE] ACCESSIBLE ROUTE. A continuous, unobstructed path that complies with Chapter 11 of the California Building Code .
ACTIVE RF EMITTING DEVICE. Any type of circuit component that requires an AC or DC power source with the ability to electrically control electron flow and/or amplification of RF signal, including but not limited to signal boosters, repeaters, bidirectional amplifiers and fiber-distributed antenna systems.
ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING. A process of joining materials to make objects from 3D model data, usually layer upon layer, sometimes referred to as 3D printing. This code recognizes two types of additive manufacturing:
Industrial additive manufacturing. 3D printing operations that typically utilize combustible powders or metals, an inert gas supply, a combustible dust collection system, or that create a hazardous (classified) location area or zone outside the equipment.

Accessory dwelling units shall include permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation on the same parcel as the single-family or multi- family dwelling is or will be situated. (See Government Code Section 65852.2.)
[A] ADDITION. An extension or increase in floor area, number of stories, or height of a building or structure.
[A] ALTERATION. Any construction or renovation to an existing structure other than a repair or addition.
[BG] AMBULATORY CARE FACILITY. Buildings or portions thereof used to provide medical, surgical, psychiatric, nursing or similar care on a less than 24-hour basis to persons who are rendered incapable of self-preservation by the services provided or staff has accepted responsibility for care recipients already incapable.
[A] APPROVED. Acceptable to the code official.

[A] CODE OFFICIAL. The official designated by the jurisdiction to interpret and enforce this code, or the code official’s authorized representative.
CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER. A set of weather conditions (usually a combination of low relative humidity and wind) whose effects on fire behavior make control difficult and threaten firefighter safety.
DEAD-END ROAD (applicable to CCR, Title 14 provisions only). A road that has only one point of vehicular ingress/egress, including cul-de- sacs and roads that loop back on themselves. [CCR Title 14 §1270.01(e)]
DEFENSIBLE SPACE. See Sections 403.1.1 and 601.3.
DRIVEWAY (applicable to CCR, Title 14 provisions only). A vehicular pathway route that serves not more than four (4) Residential Units and any number of noncommercial or nonindustrial Utility or Miscellaneous Group U Buildings. [CCR Title 14 §1270.01(i)]
[BG] DWELLING. A building that contains one or two dwelling units used, intended or designed to be used, rented, leased, let or hired out to be occupied for living purposes.

SECTION 202—DEFINITIONS
[BG] 24-HOUR BASIS. The actual time that a person is an occupant within a facility for the purpose of receiving care. It shall not include a facility that is open for 24 hours and is capable of providing care to someone visiting the facility during any segment of the 24 hours.
[BS] AAC MASONRY. Masonry made of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) units, manufactured without internal reinforcement and bonded together using thin- or thick-bed mortar.
