Duct Systems
Chapter 6 of the CMC sets mandatory material, construction, sealing, insulation and testing requirements for duct systems, with important cross‑references to the California Energy Code and SMACNA standards.

Overview
Chapter 6 of the California Mechanical Code (CMC) addresses ducts and plenums used for heating, cooling, ventilation and exhaust systems — including applicability and sizing rules (see §601.1 and §601.2 of the CMC) . The chapter connects to other CMC chapters (Chapter 5 for exhaust ducts, Chapter 7 for combustion air) and to the California Energy Code where duct sizing, insulation and sealing requirements are specified as compliance paths .

CHAPTER 6
DUCT SYSTEMS
601.0 General.
601.1 Applicability. Ducts and plenums that are portions of a heating, cooling, ventilation, or exhaust system shall comply with the requirements of this chapter, Chapter 5 for exhaust ducts, and Chapter 7 for combustion air ducts. 601.2 Sizing Requirements. Duct systems shall be sized in accordance with applicable standards in Chapter 18 or by other approved methods.
Exception: Residential duct systems shall be sized in accordance with ACCA Manual D, ACCA Manual Zr, as applicable, or by other approved methods.
601.2.1 California Energy Code Residential Return Duct Sizing Requirements. California Energy Code Tables 150.0-B and 150.0-C specify return duct sizing requirements for single return and multiple return duct systems, respectively, that are applicable as an alternative to confirming system airflow via field verification and diagnostic testing. See California Energy Code Section 150.0(m)13 for provisions applicable to newly con- structed buildings, and Section 150.2(b)(1)(F)(ii)(a) for alterations.
602.0 Material.
602.1 General. Materials used for duct systems shall comply with Section 602.2 through Section 602.7 as applicable. Exception: [OSHPD 1, 1R, 2, 3, 4 & 5] See Section 407.4.2.
CMC § 120.4 High relevance — show source text
Nonresidential and hotel/motel buildings shall comply with the applicable requirements of Sections 120.4(a) through 120.4(g).
Exception to Section 120.4: Systems serving healthcare facilities shall comply with the applicable requirements of the California Mechanical Code.
(a) CMC compliance. All air distribution system ducts and plenums, including but not limited to building cavities, mechanical closets, air-handler boxes and support platforms used as ducts or plenums, shall meet the requirements of the CMC Sections 601.0, 602.0, 603.0, 604.0, and 605.0, and ANSI/SMACNA-006-2006 HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metal and Flexible, 3rd Edition incorporated herein by reference. Connections of metal ducts and the inner core of flexible ducts shall be mechanically fastened. Openings shall be sealed with mastic, tape, aerosol sealant or other duct-closure system that meets the applicable requirements of UL 181, UL 181A, or UL 181B. If mastic or tape is used to seal openings greater than [1] / 4 inch, the combination of mastic and either mesh or tape shall be used.
Portions of supply-air and return-air ducts conveying heated or cooled air located in one or more of the following spaces shall be insulated to a minimum installed level of R-8:
Outdoors; or
In a space between the roof and an insulated ceiling; or
In a space directly under a roof with fixed vents or openings to the outside or unconditioned spaces; or
In an unconditioned crawlspace; or
In other unconditioned spaces.

NONRESIDENTIAL, HOTEL/MOTEL OCCUPANCIES, AND COVERED PROCESSES—MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
Portions of supply-air ducts that are not in one of these spaces, including ducts buried in concrete slab, shall be insulated to a minimum installed level of R-4.2 or be enclosed in directly conditioned space.
(b) Duct and plenum materials.
- Factory-fabricated duct systems. A. All factory-fabricated duct systems shall comply with UL 181 for ducts and closure systems, including collars, connections and splices, and be labeled as complying with UL 181. UL 181 testing may be performed by UL laboratories or a laboratory approved by the Executive Director. B. All pressure-sensitive tapes, heat-activated tapes, and mastics used in the manufacture of rigid fiberglass ducts shall comply with UL 181 and UL 181A. C. All pressure-sensitive tapes and mastics used with flexible ducts shall comply with UL 181 and UL 181B. D. All ductwork and plenums with pressure class ratings shall be constructed to Seal Class A. Joints and seams of duct systems and their components shall not be sealed with cloth-back rubber adhesive duct tapes unless such tape is used in combination with mastic and drawbands.
Exception to Section 120.4(b)1D: Ductwork located in occupied space and exposed to view is not required to meet Seal Class A.
CMC § 519.4 High relevance — show source text
519.4 Type II Exhaust Duct Systems. Ducts and plenums serving Type II hoods shall be constructed of rigid metallic materials in accordance with Chapter 6. Duct bracing and supports shall comply with Chapter 6. Ducts subject to positive pressure shall be adequately sealed.
519.5 Termination of Type II Hood Exhaust System. The exhaust system shall terminate in accordance with Section 502.2.2. Rooftop terminations shall be directed away

from roof surfaces within 40 inches (1016 mm). The discharge outlet of moisture conveying exhaust ducts, such as dishwasher exhaust ducts, shall not terminate over a public way or over an area where condensate or vapor could create a nuisance or hazard.
519.6 Makeup Air. Makeup air shall be provided in accordance with Section 511.3.
519.7 Independent Exhaust Duct System. Single or combined Type II exhaust systems shall be independent of all other exhaust systems.

603.7.2 Flexible Air Ducts. Flexible air ducts shall be supported in accordance with Section 603.4. 603.7.3 Other Ducts. Other approved ducts shall be supported in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
603.8 Protection Against Flood Damage. In flood hazard areas, ducts shall be located above the elevation required by the building code for utilities and attendant equipment or the elevation of the lowest floor, whichever is higher, or shall be designed and constructed to prevent water from entering or accumulating within the ducts during floods up to such elevation. Where the ducts are located below that elevation, the ducts shall be capable of resisting hydrostatic and hydrodynamic loads and stresses, including the effects of buoyancy, during the occurrence of flooding to such elevation.
603.9 Joints and Seams of Ducts. Joints and seams for duct systems shall comply with SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards – Metal and Flexible, SMACNA Round Industrial Duct Construction Standards, or SMACNA Rectangular Industrial Duct Construction Standards, as applicable. Joints of duct systems shall be made substantially airtight by means of tapes, mastics, gasketing, or other means. All ducts shall be sealed to Seal Class A. Crimp joints for round ducts shall have a contact lap of not less than 1 [1] ⁄ 2 inches (38 mm) and shall be mechanically fastened by means of not less than three sheet-metal screws equally spaced around the joint, or an equivalent fastening method.

603.9.1 Closure Systems. Joints and seams and reinforcements for air ducts and plenums listed and labeled to UL 181, shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Closure systems for sealing air ducts and plenums shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL 181A or UL 181B, and marked in accordance with Table 603.9.1.

601.0 General.
601.1 Applicability. Ducts and plenums that are portions of a heating, cooling, ventilation, or exhaust system shall comply with the requirements of this chapter, Chapter 5 for exhaust ducts, and Chapter 7 for combustion air ducts. 601.2 Sizing Requirements. Duct systems shall be sized in accordance with applicable standards in Chapter 18 or by other approved methods.

601.2.1 California Energy Code Residential Return Duct Sizing Requirements. 602.0 Material.
602.1 General. Materials used for duct systems shall comply with Section 602.2 through Section 602.7 as applicable. Exception: [OSHPD 1, 1R, 2, 3, 4 & 5] See Section 407.4.2.
[Not permitted for OSHPD 1, 1R, 2, 3, 4 & 5] Concealed building spaces or independent construction within buildings shall be permitted to be used as ducts or plenums. Gypsum board shall not be used for positive pressure ducts.
Exception: In healthcare facilities, concealed spaces shall not be permitted to be used as ducts or plenums.
602.2 Combustibles Within Ducts or Plenums. Materials exposed within ducts or plenums shall be noncombustible or shall have a flame spread index not to exceed 25 and a smoke-developed index not to exceed 50, where tested as a composite product in accordance with ASTM E84 or UL 723. Plastic piping installed in plenums shall be tested in accordance with all requirements of ASTM E84 or UL 723. Mounting methods, supports and sample sizes of materials for testing that are not specified in ASTM E84 or UL 723 shall be prohibited.
Exceptions:
(1) Return-air and outside-air ducts, plenums, or concealed spaces that serve a dwelling unit.
(2) Air filters in accordance with the requirements of Section 311.2.
(3) Water evaporation media in an evaporative cooler.
(4) Charcoal filters where protected with an approved fire suppression system.
(5) Products listed and labeled for installation within plenums in accordance with Section 602.2.1 through Section 602.2.4.
(6) Smoke detectors in accordance with the requirements of Section 609.0.
(7) Duct insulation, coverings, and linings and other supplementary materials installed in accordance with Section 605.0.
CMC § 160.3 High relevance — show source text
Exception 2 to Section 160.3(c)1: Piping that conveys fluids with a design operating temperature range between 60°F and 105°F.
Exception 3 to Section 160.3(c)1: Where the heat gain or heat loss to or from piping without insulation will not increase building source energy use. Exception 4 to Section 160.3(c)1: Piping that penetrates framing members shall not be required to have pipe insulation for the distance of the framing penetration. Metal piping that penetrates metal framing shall use grommets, plugs, wrapping or other insulating material to ensure that no contact is made with the metal framing. 2. Requirements for air distribution system, ducts and plenum. Multifamily common areas shall comply with the applicable requirements of Sections 160.3(c)2A through 160.3(c)2F. A. CMC compliance. All air distribution system ducts and plenums, including, but not limited to, building cavities, mechanical closets, air-handler boxes and support platforms used as ducts or plenums shall meet the requirements of CMC Sections 601.0, 602.0, 603.0, 604.0 and 605.0, and ANSI/SMACNA-006-2006 HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metal and Flexible 3rd Edition, incorporated herein by reference. MULTIFAMILY BUILDINGS—MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS
- Outdoor condensing units . A. Clearances. Installed air conditioner and heat pump outdoor condensing units shall have a clearance of at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) from the outlet of any dryer vent. B. Liquid line drier. Installed air conditioner and heat pump systems shall be equipped with liquid line filter driers if required, as specified by manufacturer’s instructions.
- Central forced-air heating furnaces . A. Temperature rise . Central forced-air heating furnace installations shall be configured to operate in conformance with the furnace manufacturer's maximum inlet-to-outlet temperature rise specifications.
- Air-distribution and ventilation system ducts, plenums and fans. A. CMC compliance.
i. All air-distribution system ducts and plenums, including, but not limited to, mechanical closets and air-handler boxes, shall meet the requirements of the CMC Sections 601.0, 602.0, 603.0, 604.0 and 605.0 and ANSI/SMACNA006-2006 HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metal and Flexible 3rd Edition, incorporated herein by reference. ii. Portions of supply-air and return-air ducts and plenums of a space heating or cooling system shall be insulated in accordance with either Subsection a or b below:
a. Ducts shall have a minimum installed level of R-6.0, or
Exception to Section 160.3(b)5Aiia : Portions of the duct system located in conditioned space below the ceiling separating the occupiable space from the attic are not required to be insulated if all of the following conditions are met: i. The noninsulated portion of the duct system is located entirely inside the building’s thermal envelope as confirmed by visual inspection. ii. At all locations where noninsulated portions of the duct system penetrate into unconditioned space, the penetration shall be draft stopped compliant with CFC Sections 703.1 and 704.1 and air-sealed to the construction materials that are penetrated, using materials compliant with CMC Section E502.4.2 to prevent air infiltration into the cavity. All connections in unconditioned space are insulated to a minimum of R-6.0 as confirmed by visual inspection. b. Ducts do not require insulation when the duct system is located entirely in conditioned space. For buildings with three or fewer habitable stories, duct systems located entirely in conditioned space shall be confirmed through field verification and diagnostic testing in accordance with the requirements of Reference Residential Appendix RA3.1.4.3.8. iii. Connections of metal ducts and the inner core of flexible ducts shall be mechanically fastened. iv. Openings shall be sealed with mastic, tape or other duct-closure system that meets the applicable requirements of UL 181, UL 181A or UL 181B or aerosol sealant that meets the requirements of UL 723. If mastic or tape is used to seal openings greater than [1] / 4 inch, the combination of mastic and either mesh or tape shall be used. v. Building cavities, support platforms for air handlers, and plenums designed or constructed with materials other than sealed sheet metal, duct board or flexible duct shall not be used for conveying conditioned air.
CMC § 602.2.4 Medium relevance — show source text
602.2.4 Discrete Products in Plenums. Discrete plumbing, mechanical, and electrical products that are located in a plenum and have exposed combustible material shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL
602.3 Tall Wood (Mass Timber) Buildings. Duct systems installed in tall wood (mass timber) buildings shall comply with the following:
(1) Be designed by a registered design professional in accordance with this code and the building code.
(2) Be designed to accommodate expansion, contraction, and differential movement between parts of a tall wood (mass timber) building in accordance with Section 316.2.

602.4 Metallic. Ducts, plenums, or fittings of metal shall comply with SMACNA HVAC Duct Construction Standards – Metal and Flexible. Flexible metallic ducts shall comply with UL 181.
602.5 Nonmetallic Ducts. Nonmetallic ducts shall comply with Section 602.5.1, Section 602.5.2, Section 602.5.3, Section 602.5.4, or Section 602.5.5.
602.5.1 Phenolic. Phenolic duct, plenum, or fitting material shall comply with UL 181. Ducts, plenums, or fittings of phenolic shall be constructed in accordance with SMACNA Phenolic Duct Construction Standards or the conditions of its listing.
602.5.2 Gypsum. Where gypsum products are exposed in ducts or plenums, the air temperature shall be restricted to a range from 50°F (10°C) to 125°F (52°C), and moisture content shall be controlled so that the material is not adversely affected. All gypsum products shall have a mold or mildew resistant surface. For the purpose of this section, gypsum products shall not be exposed in supply ducts.
602.5.3 Air Dispersion Systems. Air dispersion systems shall be listed and labeled in accordance with UL
602.5.4 Fibrous Glass Duct. Fibrous glass ducts, plenums, or fittings shall be constructed in accordance with SMACNA Fibrous Glass Duct Construction Stan dards or NAIMA Fibrous Glass Duct Construction Stan dards.
602.5.5 Other Materials. Flexible and rigid ducts, plenums, or fittings for use in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems of other nonmetallic materials listed and labeled to UL 181 shall be permitted.
Exception: Plastic ducts shall comply with Section 603.5.
602.6 Vibration Isolators. Vibration isolation connectors installed between mechanical equipment and metal ducts (or casings) shall be made of an approved material and shall not exceed 10 inches (254 mm) in length.
602.7 Corridors. Corridors shall not be used to convey air to or from rooms where the corridor is required to be of fire-resistive construction in accordance with the building code except where permitted by the building code. Corridors shall not serve as supply, return, exhaust, relief, or ventilation air ducts.
603.0 Installation of Ducts.
CMC § 703.1 Medium relevance — show source text
a. The noninsulated portion of the duct system is located entirely inside the building’s thermal envelope as confirmed by visual inspection. b. At all locations where noninsulated portions of the duct system penetrate into unconditioned space, the penetration shall be draft stopped compliant with CFC Sections 703.1 and 704.1 and air-sealed to the construction materials that are penetrated, using materials compliant with CMC Section E502.4.2 to prevent air infiltration into the cavity. All connections in unconditioned space are insulated to a minimum of R-6.0 as confirmed by visual inspection. Exception 2 to Section 150.0(m)1Bi : Ducts located in an unvented attic shall have a minimum insulation value of R-4.2, verified by visual inspection where:
a. The attic has at least R-30 insulation between the roof rafters in contact with the roof deck.
b. The gable ends meet the wall insulation requirements of Section 150.1(c)1B. c. The dwelling unit achieves a whole building leakage rate of 3.0 ACH50 or less, as confirmed by field verification and diagnostic testing in accordance with Reference Residential Appendix RA3.8. ii. Ducts do not require insulation when the duct system is located entirely within conditioned space, as confirmed through field verification and diagnostic testing in accordance with the requirements of Reference Residential Appendix RA3.1.4.3.8. For dwelling units with attics, the duct system shall be located below the ceiling separating the occupiable space from the attic. C. Connections of metal ducts and the inner core of flexible ducts shall be mechanically fastened. D. Openings shall be sealed with mastic, tape or other duct-closure system that meets the applicable requirements of UL 181, UL181A or UL 181B or aerosol sealant that meets the requirements of UL 723. If mastic or tape is used to seal openings greater than [1] / 4 inch, the combination of mastic and either mesh or tape shall be used. E. Building cavities, support platforms for air handlers and plenums designed or constructed with materials other than sealed sheet metal, duct board or flexible duct shall not be used for conveying conditioned air. Building cavities and support platforms may contain ducts. Ducts installed in cavities and support platforms shall not be compressed to cause reductions in the cross-sectional area of the ducts.
Exception to Section 150.0(m)1: Ducts and fans integral to a wood heater or fireplace. 2. Factory-fabricated duct systems. A. CMC § 519.1 Medium relevance — show source text
519.1 Where Required. Type II hoods shall be installed above equipment and dishwashers that generate steam, heat, or products of combustion, and where grease or smoke is not present.
Exceptions:
(1) Dishwashing machines connected to a Type II duct system and exhausted directly to the outdoors.
(2) Dishwashing machines with a self-contained condensing system listed in accordance with UL 921 and installed in a space where the HVAC system has been engineered to accommodate the latent and sensible heat load emitted from such appliances as approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction. Such equipment shall be provided with an interlocking device to prevent opening of the appliance prior to completion of its cycle. 519.2 Construction of Type II Hoods. Type II hoods constructed of steel shall be not less than 0.024 of an inch (0.61 mm) (No. 24 gauge). Hoods constructed of copper shall be of copper sheets weighing not less than 0.17 ounces per square inch (oz/in [2] ) (7.47 kg/m [2] ). Joints and seams shall be substantially tight. Solder shall not be used except for sealing a joint or seam. 519.3 Type II Hood Exhaust System Net Airflow. The net airflow for Type II hoods shall be in accordance with Section 508.5.1.5 for light-duty cooking appliances. The net airflow for Type II hoods serving dishwashing appliances shall comply with Section 519.3.1.
519.3.1 Dishwashing Appliances. The net airflow for Type II hoods used for dishwashing equipment shall be not less than 200 cubic feet per minute (0.094 m [3] /s) per linear foot (m) of hood length.
519.4 Type II Exhaust Duct Systems. Ducts and plenums serving Type II hoods shall be constructed of rigid metallic materials in accordance with Chapter 6. Duct bracing and supports shall comply with Chapter 6. Ducts subject to positive pressure shall be adequately sealed.
519.5 Termination of Type II Hood Exhaust System. The exhaust system shall terminate in accordance with Section 502.2.2. Rooftop terminations shall be directed away

from roof surfaces within 40 inches (1016 mm). The discharge outlet of moisture conveying exhaust ducts, such as dishwasher exhaust ducts, shall not terminate over a public way or over an area where condensate or vapor could create a nuisance or hazard.
519.6 Makeup Air. Makeup air shall be provided in accordance with Section 511.3.
519.7 Independent Exhaust Duct System. Single or combined Type II exhaust systems shall be independent of all other exhaust systems.

ii. At all locations where noninsulated portions of the duct system penetrate into unconditioned space, the penetration shall be draft stopped compliant with CFC Sections 703.1 and 704.1 and air-sealed to the construction materials that are penetrated, using materials compliant with CMC Section E502.4.2 to prevent air infiltration into the cavity. All connections in unconditioned space are insulated to a minimum of R-6.0 as confirmed by visual inspection. b. Ducts do not require insulation when the duct system is located entirely in conditioned space. For buildings with three or fewer habitable stories, duct systems located entirely in conditioned space shall be confirmed through field verification and diagnostic testing in accordance with the requirements of Reference Residential Appendix RA3.1.4.3.8. iii. Connections of metal ducts and the inner core of flexible ducts shall be mechanically fastened. iv. Openings shall be sealed with mastic, tape or other duct-closure system that meets the applicable requirements of UL 181, UL 181A or UL 181B or aerosol sealant that meets the requirements of UL 723. If mastic or tape is used to seal openings greater than [1] / 4 inch, the combination of mastic and either mesh or tape shall be used. v. Building cavities, support platforms for air handlers, and plenums designed or constructed with materials other than sealed sheet metal, duct board or flexible duct shall not be used for conveying conditioned air. Building cavities and support platforms may contain ducts. Ducts installed in cavities and support platforms shall not be compressed to cause reductions in the cross-sectional area of the ducts. Exception to Section 160.3(b)5A: Ducts and fans integral to a wood heater or fireplace. B. Factory-fabricated duct systems . i. (4) Automatic shutoff is not required for approved smokecontrol systems or where analysis demonstrates shutoff would create a greater hazard, such as shall be permitted to be encountered in air-moving equipment supplying specialized portions of Group H Occupancies. Such equipment shall be required to have smoke detection with remote indication and manual shutoff capability at an approved location.
(5) Smoke detectors that are factory installed in listed airmoving equipment shall be permitted to be used in lieu of smoke detectors installed in the main supply-air duct served by such equipment.
609.1.1 Duct Smoke Detectors. Duct smoke detec- tors shall comply with UL 268A, shall be labeled by an approved agency, approved and listed by California State Fire Marshal, and shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions. Such devices shall be compatible with the operating velocities, pres- sures, temperatures, and humidity’s of the system. Where fire-detection or alarm systems are provided for the building, the smoke detectors shall be supervised by such

systems in an approved manner and installed in accor- dance with NFPA 72 and the California Building and Fire Codes.
High-rise buildings having occupied floors located more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) above the lowest level of building access shall be provided with duct smoke detec- tion in accordance with Section 609.1 and the California Fire Code, Section 907.2.13.1.
609.2 Air-Moving Systems and Smoke Detectors in Group I-2 Occupancies. In Group I-2 occupancies, air- moving systems returning air in excess of 2,000 cubic feet per minute (ft [3] /min) (0.9439 m [3] /s) from enclosed spaces within buildings shall be equipped with an automatic shutoff. Auto- matic shutoff shall be accomplished by interrupting the power source of the air-moving equipment upon detection of smoke in the return air duct or plenum upstream of any filters, exhaust air connections, outside air connections, or decont- amination equipment and appliances.
Group I-2 occupancies having occupied floors located more than 75 feet (22 860 mm) above the lowest level of fire department vehicle access shall be provided with duct smoke detection in accordance with this section and the California Fire Code, Section 907.2.13.1.
