11.08.010 TraFc division established.¶
There is established in the police department of this city the responsibility for parking control, traTc law
enforcement and accident investigation. The police department shall cooperate with other city departments in
improving traTc Sow and carrying out the duties imposed by this title and other traTc ordinances of Petaluma.

11.08.020 TraFc accident reports.¶
The police department shall maintain a system of Rling traTc accident reports with index, which shall be shared
with the traTc engineer. (Ord. 1331 NCS §1, 1978.)
11.08.030 City traFc engineer—OFce established.¶
The oTce of city traTc engineer is established. The city traTc engineer shall be appointed by the city manager
and he shall exercise the powers and duties as provided in this chapter and in the traTc ordinances of this city.
Whenever the city traTc engineer is required or authorized to place or maintain oTcial traTc-control devices or
signals, he may cause such devices or signals to be placed or maintained. (Ord. 1331 NCS §1, 1978.)
11.08.040 Powers and duties of traFc engineer.¶
It shall be the general duty of the city traTc engineer to determine the installation and proper timing and
maintenance of traTc-control devices and signals, to conduct engineering analyses of traTc accidents and to devise remedial measures, to conduct engineering and traTc investigations of traTc conditions and to cooperate
with other city oTcials in the development of ways and means to improve traTc conditions and to carry out the
additional powers and duties imposed by ordinances of this city. Whenever, by the provisions of this chapter, a
power is granted to the city traTc engineer or a duty imposed upon him the power may be exercised or the duty
performed by his duly authorized subordinate (Ord. 1331 NCS §1, 1978.)
11.08.050 TraFc committee established—Composition—Compensation.¶
There is established an advisory traTc committee to serve without additional compensation, consisting of the
traTc engineer or a senior representative, a representative of the planning department, a representative of the
police department, a representative of the public works department and a member of the city council. Designation
of the staU representatives to serve shall be made by the respective supervising department head, with approval
of the city manager. The council member shall be appointed by the city council. (Ord. 1730 NCS §1, 1988; Ord.

11.08.060 Powers and duties of traFc committee.¶
A. It shall be the duty of the traTc committee to suggest the most practicable means for coordinating the
activities of the agencies responsible for administration or enforcement of traTc regulations, to stimulate and
assist in the preparation and publication of special traTc reports, to receive complaints having to do with traTc
matters and to recommend to the legislative body or other city oTcials, ways and means to improve traTc Sow
and administer and enforce traTc regulations.
B. In cases where a responsible city staU member has taken discretionary action which aggrieves any person
aUected by such decision, such person may appeal said decision to the traTc committee.
