Chapter 8.16 — TRAPS AND INTERCEPTORS

and derived from Prior code §§ 6500—6504.

"Gravity grease interceptor" means a plumbing appurtenance or appliance that is installed in a sanitary drainage system to intercept nonpetroleum fats, oils, and greases (FOG) from a wastewater discharge and is identified by volume, thirty-minute retention time, baffle(s), a minimum of two compartments, a minimum total volume of three hundred (300) gallons, and gravity separation. [These interceptors comply with the requirements of Chapter 10 of the California Plumbing Code or are designed by a registered professional engineer.] Gravity grease interceptors are generally installed outside.

"Grease interceptor" means a plumbing appurtenance or appliance that is installed in a sanitary drainage system to intercept nonpetroleum fats, oils, and greases (FOG) from a wastewater discharge.

"Grease removal device (GRD)" means any hydromechanical grease interceptor that automatically, mechanically removes non-petroleum fats, oils and grease (FOG) from the interceptor, the control of which are either automatic or manually initiated.

"Grease trap" means a device designed to retain grease from one to a maximum of four fixtures. This term has been used in previous editions of this code. Refer to hydromechanical grease interceptor and gravity grease interceptor, GRD, and FOG disposal system.

It is the duty of the owner and person or persons in possession of any commercial or business establishment to install an approved grease-trap interceptor, separator or FOG disposal system at each such establishment within one hundred twenty (120) days after the enactment of provisions of this chapter. Requirements for the need, approval, design, location, maintenance and discharge of traps, interceptors, separators or FOG disposal systems shall be in accordance with the California Plumbing Code as adopted by the city.

It is the duty of the owner and person or persons in possession of any commercial or business establishment to adequately clean, maintain and repair every grease-trap, interceptor, separator, or FOG disposal system so installed at each such establishment to insure that grease does not enter the sewer system of the city. The maintenance and repair required for traps, interceptors, separators, FOG disposal systems or for any other means of FOG disposal shall be performed at the owner's expense.

The officers, inspectors, and any duly authorized employees of the city shall, upon exhibiting the proper credentials and identification, be permitted to enter in and upon any and all buildings, industrial facilities and properties for the purposes of inspection, reinspection, observation, measurement, sampling, testing or otherwise performing such duties as may be necessary to ensure the proper maintenance is being conducted for all grease traps, interceptors, separators, FOG disposal systems or for any other means of fog disposal. It is the duty of the Orland city department of public works to inspect each grease-trap, interceptor, separator or FOG disposal system at each establishment once every calendar month.

Every person who violates any of the provisions of this chapter shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof, shall be punished as provided in Section 1.12.010 of this code. Each day's continuing violation shall be a separate offense.
