§ 4-7.01. Personal transportation devices defined.

For the purposes of this chapter, "personal transportation devices" shall mean any device which is used to propel or transport a person or persons by means of muscular power, wind power or any type of motor or engine (excluding motor vehicles, bicycles or wheel chair — invalid tricycle — or motorized quadricycle when operated by a person who operates such device due to a physical disability). Personal transportation devices include but are not limited to, skateboards, roller skates, in line skates, and similar devices.

§ 4-7.02. Restricted use: Public streets.

Persons operating a personal transportation device that is not otherwise controlled by the California Vehicle Code are subject to the same regulations as are pedestrians while operating these devices on public streets, alleys or right-of-ways.

§ 4-7.03. Prohibited use: Public sidewalks and restricted areas.

It is unlawful to operate a personal transportation device on any public sidewalk in a business district or any restricted area or any private property without the permission of the property owner or person in control of the property.

§ 4-7.04. Business district defined.

For the purposes of this chapter, "business district" shall be defined as any public sidewalk or driveway which borders any commercial building.

§ 4-7.05. Restricted area defined.

For the purposes of this chapter, "restricted area" shall be defined as any section of public sidewalk, walkway, thoroughfare, or other area which is clearly posted by means of signs or painted markings prohibiting the operation of personal transportation devices.

§ 4-7.06. Violations: Penalties.

Any person violating any provision of this chapter shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, shall be punishable as set forth in Chapter 2 of Title 1 of this Code.
