Sec. 2.96.010. - Sale or disposal.¶
Unclaimed property, not otherwise required to be disposed of according to law, in the possession of the chief of police, shall be held by the chief of police for at least three months and thereafter may be sold at public auction to the highest bidder after notice of such sale is given by the chief of police at least five days before the time fixed therefor by publication once in a newspaper of general circulation published in the city. Property remaining unsold after such a sale may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the chief of police. All monies received from any such sale shall be deposited in the general fund of the city.

Sec. 2.96.020. - Bicycles and toys.¶
Notwithstanding the provisions of section 2.96.010, pursuant to Welfare and Institutions Code § 217, any bicycles or toys in such possession of the chief of police for a period of at least 90 days may, instead of being sold, be turned over to the probation officer, to the department of public social services of the county or to any charitable or nonprofit organization which is authorized under its articles of incorporation to participate in a program or activity designed to prevent juvenile delinquency and which is exempt from income taxation under federal or state law, or both, for use in any program or activity designed to prevent juvenile delinquency.

Sec. 2.96.030. - Retention by city; when allowed.¶
If the chief of police determines that such unclaimed property is needed for a public use, the property may be retained by the city and need not be sold. Such property may not be redeemable by the owner or other person entitled to possession after the time periods described in section 2.96.010 have expired.
