§ 8-18 DANGEROUS WEAPONS AND FIREARMS

§ 8-18.1. Definitions. [Ord. 654, § 1; Ord. 60-023, § 1; 1958 Code § 21.5]

As used in this section:

DANGEROUS WEAPON — Shall mean and include, but is not limited to:

  • a. Any knife having a blade three (3") inches or more in length, or any snap-blade or spring-blade knife, regardless of the length of the blade;

  • b. Any ice pick or similar sharp-stabbing tool;

  • c. Any straight-edge razor or any razor blade fitted to a handle;

  • d. Any cutting, stabbing or bludgeoning weapon or device capable of inflicting grievous bodily harm;

  • e. Any dirk, dagger or bludgeon;

  • f. Any slingshot.

§ 8-18.2. Possession of Dangerous Weapons. [Ord. 654, § 2; 1958 Code § 21.6]

It shall be unlawful for any person to carry upon his person or to have in his possession or under his control any dangerous weapon; provided, that it shall be a defense to any prosecution for a violation of this subsection, if, at the time of the alleged violation, the instrument or device alleged to be a dangerous weapon was in good faith in his possession or control for use in his lawful occupation or employment or for the purpose of recreation; and provided, further, that the provisions of this subsection shall not apply to the commission of any act which is made a public offense by any law of this State.

It shall be unlawful for any person who has upon his person or in his possession or control any dangerous weapon to engage in any fight or to participate in any rough or disorderly conduct upon any public place or way or upon the premises of another.

It shall be unlawful for any person to fire or discharge any gun, cannon, rifle, pistol, revolver, air gun, blank cartridge pistol, except toy cap pistols, or firearms of any kind within the limits of the City.

§ 8-18.5. Bows and Arrows; Archery Ranges. [Ord. 60-023, § 2; 1958 Code § 21.9-1]

It shall be unlawful for any person to shoot or discharge an arrow from a bow within the City except upon a properly located and constructed archery range which has been approved as to safety of location and construction by the Chief of Police. No minor under the age of eighteen (18) shall shoot or discharge an arrow from a bow except upon such a properly located, constructed and approved archery range and then only when under the immediate supervision of an adult. Nothing herein shall apply to the use of a bow of ten (10) pounds or less draw weight with a blunt, rubber-tipped arrow.

It shall be the duty of every person who shall hereafter install, set up or operate an archery range to apply to the Chief of Police for approval of such range before operating the same. In the event the Chief of Police shall deny the certificate, such person shall have the right of appeal to the Council of the City within ten (10) days from the date of such denial.

§ 8-18.6. Hunting, Trapping, or Harassing Animals. [Ord. 97-11]

It shall be unlawful for any person to hunt, trap, to harass, or to disturb the habitat of any animal or fowl upon any public property, water, or way within the City limits. This section does not prohibit persons from fishing when they possess a valid Fish and Game fishing license and act in accordance with the laws of the State of California, and does not prohibit animal control officers or safety service persons acting under authority of law.
