15.28.010 - Fire resistive materials.

General. Buildings or structures hereafter erected, constructed, moved within or into Fire Zone Four shall meet the requirements of this section.

A. Exterior walls of all buildings shall be of one-hour fire-resistive construction. Exterior glass in such walls shall be double glazed, wood shake shingles being used as an exterior wall covering shall be treated with a fire retardant chemical.

Exceptions:

  1. Doors need not be protected.

  2. Single glazing may be approved, on a limited application with a heat-reflective coating.

B. Roof soffits (including eaves) open patios, carports, porches, unenclosed underfloor areas and open structures, attached or detached, shall be protected on the under side with materials as approved for one-hour fire-resistive construction or shall be of incombustible material throughout.

C. Roof coverings for all structures within the city shall be fire-retardant.

Exception: When in the opinion of the fire marshal, no material increase in fire hazard will occur, additions not exceeding twenty-five percent of the square footage over the life of the building, may be covered with the same materials used on the existing building.

D. Any roof covering conforming to the specifications of the Underwriters Laboratory for class "A" roof covering as published in the Underwriters Laboratory "List of Fire Protection Equipment and Materials" shall be considered a "fire-retardant roof covering."

Exception: Asphalt composition shingles with class "B" rating.

15.28.020 - Very high fire hazard severity zone.

For the purpose of prescribing regulations governing conditions hazardous to life and property from wildfire, the City Council of the City of Sierra Madre hereby designates a very high fire hazard severity zone as recommended by the Director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and as designated on a map titled "SIERRA MADRE VERY HIGH FIRE HAZARD SEVERITY ZONE," dated June 24, 2008, as illustrated and retained on file in the office of the City Clerk of the City of Sierra Madre.
