C4-121. - Definitions.

For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply: Anti-drain valve or check valve means a valve located under a sprinkler head or to hold water in a system so it minimizes drainage. Application rate means the depth of water applied to a given area, usually measured in inches per hour. Automatic controller means a mechanical or solid state timer, capable of operating valve stations to set the days and length of time of a water application.

Backflow prevention device means a safety device used to prevent pollution or contamination of the water supply due to the reverse flow of water from the irrigation system. Established landscape means the point at which the plants in the landscape have developed roots into the soil adjacent to the root ball. Established period means the first year after installing the plant in the landscape. Evapotransportation means the quantity of water evaporated from adjacent soil surfaces and transpired by plants during specific time. Greenbelts means a linear park or closely interconnected system of city or school neighborhood parks located along a roadway, waterway, bikeway or other similar public corridor. The length varies, and the overall shape is generally elongated and narrow. Flow rate means the rate at which the water flows through pipes and valves. Infiltration rate means the rate of water entry into the soil expressed as a depth of water per unit of time in inches per hour. Moisture sensing device means a device that measures the amount of water in the soil. Mulch means any material such as leaves, bark, straw, or other material left loose and applied to the soil surface to reduce evaporation. Potable water means water which is suitable for human consumption. Precipitation rate means the rate at which water is applied, usually expressed in inches per hour. Rain sensing device means a system which automatically shuts off the irrigation system when it rains. Recycled water (also referred to as reclaimed water or treated sewage effluent) means treated or recycled water of a quality suitable for non-potable uses such as landscape irrigation; not intended for drinking. Run off means water which is not absorbed by the soil or landscape to which it is applied. For example, run off may result from water which is applied at too great a rate (application exceeds infiltration rate) or when there is a severe slope. Sprinkler head means a device which discharges water through a nozzle. Turf means a surface layer of earth containing mowed grass with the roots. Kentucky bluegrass, perennial rye grass, red fescue, and tall fescue are cool season grasses. Bermudagrass, Kikuyugrass, St. Augustinegrass and Zoysiagrass are warm season grasses.
