Richmond Municipal Code Ch. 7.52 Public Dances and Dance Halls

CABARET means any place conducting a public performance for profit, including every public vaudeville or other performance or diversion in the way of dancing by performers, acting or declamation, either with or without instrumental or other music, conducted by professionals, amateurs or patrons, and under the auspices of the management, in connection with the serving or selling of food or other refreshment or merchandise at any room in any hotel, restaurant, hall or other public place. Every form of entertainment so conducted is included, except instrumental music and singing.

DANCE HALL means any place or premises where dancing is the principal activity and the sale of food, beverages or merchandise, if any such is sold, is merely incidental to such activity.

PUBLIC DANCE means a dance conducted in a hall to which the public is invited.

PRIVATE DANCE means any dance other than a public dance.

It shall be unlawful for any person to open, operate, conduct or carry on any place where dancing by patrons is permitted in conjunction with the serving or selling of food or refreshment or merchandise, any dance hall, cabaret or public dance, between the hours of two a.m. and nine a.m.

The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to private dances or to dances sponsored by the recreation department of the city.

Any person who violates any part of this chapter shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
