3-10-1: REQUIREMENTS:

Fire hydrants shall be required on all public water pipelines of six inch (6") diameter or larger constructed by or for property owners within the city. (Ord. 1216, 12-11-1979)

3-10-2: LOCATION:

The location, number and type of fire hydrants connected to a water supply capable of delivering the required fire flow shall be provided on the public street or on the site of the premises to be protected as required and approved by the chief. Maximum distance between hydrants and structures shall be as follows:

Single-family residential parcels larger than 2 acres 1,000 feet
Single-family residential parcels 2 acres and smaller 500 feet
Multi-family residential - maximum 4 units 500 feet
Commercial and industrial and multi-family residential - 5 or more units 250 feet

3-10-3: SPECIFICATIONS:

The fire flow, duration, and residual pressure shall be as specified by the fire chief. The minimum requirements shall be:

Flow 500 gallons per minute
Duration 2 hours
Residual pressure 20 pounds per square inch

3-10-4: CONFORMITY OF FIRE HYDRANTS:

Fire hydrants shall conform to the latest revision of AWWA C 502, AWWA standard for dry barrel fire hydrants, and shall have the following characteristics:

(A) Fire hydrants shall be of the traffic type with a break off safety flange.

(B) Each hydrant shall have one 41/2-inch and two (2) 21/2-inch hose connections with national standard hose threads.

(C) The operating nut and nozzle cap nuts shall be one and one- half inch (11/2") pentagon. Fire hydrants shall open to the left.

Fire hydrants shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. (Ord. 1216, 12-11-1979)

3-10-5: VARIANCE:

When it is in the public interest, the fire chief, or his duly appointed representative, may grant a variance from the strict requirements of this chapter relating to the following:

(A) Location of fire hydrants.

(B) Fire hydrant type and specifications for fire hydrants.

(C) Manner of installation of fire hydrants. (Ord. 1216, 12-11-1979)
