10.12.010 Authority to install traffic-control devices.¶
The city traffic engineer shall place and maintain or cause to be placed and maintained official traffic- control devices upon streets and highways as required under the Vehicle Code or the traffic ordinances of Murrieta to make effective the provisions of the Vehicle Code or the ordinances, and may place and maintain or cause to be placed and maintained, such appropriate official traffic-control devices as he or she may deem necessary properly to indicate and to carry out the provisions of the Code or the ordinances or to warn or guide traffic. 10.12.020 Official traffic-control devices required for enforcement purposes.¶
No provisions of the Vehicle Code or of this chapter for which official traffic-control devices are required shall be enforced against an alleged violator unless appropriate official traffic-control devices are in place giving notice of such provision of the traffic laws.

10.12.030 Authority for stop signs and yield signs.¶
The city traffic engineer is authorized to erect and maintain stop signs, yield signs, or other official traffic-control devices to designate through streets or to designate intersections or other roadway junctions at which vehicular traffic on one or more of the roadways should yield or stop and yield before entering the intersection or junction.

10.12.040 Installation of traffic signals.¶
A. The city traffic engineer shall, subject to the fiscal determination of the council, install and maintain official traffic signals at those intersections and other places where traffic conditions are such as to require that the flow of traffic be alternately interrupted and released in order to prevent or relieve traffic congestions or to protect life or property from exceptional hazard.
B. The city traffic engineer shall ascertain and determine the locations where such signals are required by an engineering and traffic survey and his or her determinations therefrom shall be made in accordance with those traffic engineering and safety standards and instructions set forth in the Department of Transportation Traffic Manual.
C. The city traffic engineer shall erect and maintain at each signal-controlled intersection street name signs clearly visible to traffic approaching from all directions. (Ord. 98 § 1 (part), 1993: Ord. 3 § 1 (part), 1991: prior code § 12.04.004)
10.12.050 Traffic lanes.¶
The city traffic engineer shall have authority to mark traffic lanes upon the roadway of any street or highway where a regular alignment of traffic is necessary.

10.12.060 Distinctive roadway markings.¶
The city traffic engineer is to place and maintain upon highways distinctive roadway markings as described in the Vehicle Code.

10.12.070 Authority to remove, relocate and discontinue traffic-control devices.¶
The city traffic engineer is to remove, relocate or discontinue the operation of any traffic-control device not specifically required by the Vehicle Code or this chapter whenever he or she shall determine in any particular case that the conditions which warranted or required the installation to no longer exist. 10.12.080 Traffic-control devices--Hours of operation.¶
The city traffic engineer shall determine the hours and days during which any traffic-control device shall be in operation or be in effect, except in those cases where such hours or days are specified in this chapter.

10.12.090 Unauthorized painting of curbs.¶
No person or agency unless authorized by the city traffic engineer, shall paint any street or curb surface; provided, however, that this section shall not apply to the painting of numbers on a curb surface by any person who has complied with the provisions of any ordinance or resolution of Murrieta pertaining thereto.

10.12.100 City traffic engineer to establish crosswalks.¶
A. The city traffic engineer shall establish, designate and maintain marked crosswalks at intersections and other places by appropriate devices, marks or lines upon the surface of the roadway where in his or her opinion there is particular danger to pedestrians crossing the roadway.
B. The city traffic engineer is authorized to install signs at or adjacent to an intersection in respect to any crosswalk directing that pedestrians shall not cross in the crosswalk so indicated.
