§ 6.12.010. Goats, sheep, cows and horses—Keeping restrictions.

It is unlawful for any person to keep or maintain or cause or permit to be kept or maintained within the corporate limits of the city any goats, sheep, cows or other bovine animals, or horses, mules, donkeys, ponies or other equine animals, within any pen or stable, the exterior boundaries of which are within fifty feet of any school, church, public building, hotel, restaurant, lunchroom, or the dwelling house of any person other than the dwelling house or residence occupied by the owner of the animal or animals or within one hundred feet of any hospital or other building especially designed or used for the care of the sick or injured. § 6.12.020. Goats, sheep, cows and horses—Permit required.

No person shall keep any of the animals mentioned in Section 6.12.010 under any conditions without having first obtained a permit therefor from the city finance officer who is empowered to issue such permits in accordance with the provisions of this chapter. (Prior code § 3-7)

§ 6.12.030. Goats, sheep, cows and horses—Sanitary requirements.

No permit shall be granted to any person for the keeping of any animal described in Sections 6.12.010 through 6.12.040 unless proper provisions have been made for a sanitary building or yard where the animal may be kept and, unless the premises are maintained in a sanitary manner, the permit may be revoked by the officer granting the same. § 6.12.040. Goats, sheep, cows and horses—Permit expiration—Nontransferable.

The permits shall be made to expire and be renewed on the first day of May of each year, and shall be nontransferable.

§ 6.12.050. Domestic fowl and rabbits—Restrictions.

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep any chickens, ducks, pigeons, geese, turkeys, rabbits, Belgian hares, guinea pigs or other domestic fowls or animals in any enclosure in the city unless the exterior boundaries of the enclosure are more than twenty feet from any dwelling, church or school, or to permit the accumulation of offal, or manure in any coop or enclosure in which such fowls or animals may be kept. § 6.12.060. Domestic fowl and rabbits—Exceptions.

The terms of Sections 6.12.050 through 6.12.070 shall not be construed to apply to such domestic fowls or animals kept in any enclosure within twenty feet from any dwelling with the written consent of the owner thereof, or to domestic fowls or animals kept in a bona fide produce market. § 6.12.070. Domestic fowl and rabbits—At large—Prohibited.

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation owning or having possession of any pigeons, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, rabbits, Belgian hares, guinea pigs, or any other domestic fowls or animals, to permit the same to run or go upon the premises of any other person, firm or corporation within the city.

§ 6.12.080. Hogs, shoats, pigs and roosters—Prohibited.

It is unlawful and a misdemeanor for any person, firm, or corporation to keep in any sty, pen or other enclosure, or to have in his, her, their, or its possession, within the limits of the city any live hog or hogs, shoat or shoats, pig or pigs, or any rooster or roosters or cockerel or cockerels over one hundred days in age.

§ 6.12.090. Hogs, shoats, pigs and roosters—Exceptions—Transportation.

It is not unlawful under the provisions of Sections 6.12.080 through 6.12.100 to transport or carry through the city any live hog or hogs, shoat or shoats, pig or pigs, or any rooster or roosters or cockerel or cockerels over one hundred days in age. (Prior code § 3-11)

§ 6.12.100. Hogs, shoats, pigs and roosters—Time limit within city.

Any live hog or hogs, shoat or shoats, pig or pigs, or any rooster or roosters or cockerel or cockerels over one hundred days in age, being transported or carried through the city, shall not remain within the limits of the city for a longer period of time than twenty-four hours from the time of entry thereof into the city.

§ 6.12.110. Potbelly pigs exception.

Notwithstanding anything in this code to the contrary, it is lawful to possess or own potbelly pigs in the city subject to the following limitations:

  • A. It is unlawful to possess or own more than two potbelly pigs. It is further unlawful to have more than two potbelly pigs at any one residence, establishment or dwelling.

  • B. It is unlawful to possess or own any potbelly pig which exceeds a height of nineteen inches at the shoulder or weighs more than one hundred pounds.

  • C. All potbelly pigs shall be kept securely enclosed in a room, pen or other enclosure or such potbelly pigs shall be kept securely tethered or on a leash. No person owning, or having care, custody or control or possession of any potbelly pig shall suffer or allow or permit such potbelly pig to run, be or remain at large on any public street, road, alley, park, square or other public place or upon any private property other than the property of the owner or custodian of such potbelly pig without the consent of the owner of such property, within the corporate limits of city; and all potbelly pigs may be deemed running at large within the meaning of this section unless securely tethered or on a leash of sufficient strength as to prevent being broken.

  • D. All person who possess or own potbelly pigs shall obtain a license therefore from the finance department and pay the fee as, from time to time, set by resolution of the city council.
