18.08.010 - Definitions.

For the purpose of this chapter certain words are defined as follows:

BUILDING means every store, public garage, service station, theater, bank, office building or any structure or building used for commercial or business purposes.

HOUSE means every dwelling house, residence, flat, apartment, hotel or any structure designed and used for habitation or residential purposes.

STREET means every avenue, boulevard, drive, lane or public street or thoroughfare upon which any house or building fronts.

18.08.020 - Building numbering system and maps.

The San Diego city grid system of building numbering is hereby established as the uniform system of house and building numbers in the city of La Mesa. All those certain maps or plats prepared by the city engineer and filed in the office of the city clerk on the first day of November, 1929, entitled, "House numbering system for the city of La Mesa," and all other maps used subsequently by the city clerk in connection with the issuance of building numbers, are hereby approved as being incorporated in such system. The city engineering department shall preserve and maintain such maps and develop others in conformity with this system as is necessary.

18.08.030 - Building number assignment.

The city engineering department shall administer the building numbering system of the city and in so doing shall assign building numbers in conformity therewith to each of the lots, portions of lots, tracts and parcels of land within the city which are existing or may be created by subdivision or annexation. A record of each number so assigned shall be recorded and maintained on a map, or maps, and filed in the city engineering department.

18.08.040 - Issuing and recording numbers.

Application for a house or building number shall be made through the department of building and safety. The city engineer shall issue the appropriate number according to the applicable numbering map and shall keep an accurate record of the number actually assigned.

18.08.050 - Placing number upon new building.

Within thirty days after completion of the building, the owner, lessor or occupant thereof shall place the allotted number upon such house or building.

18.08.060 - Size and location of numbers.

All house or building numbers shall be in figures of not less than three inches in height, and shall be placed on the house or building in a conspicuous place thereon, which shall be visible from the street.
