§ 15.12.010 DEFINITIONS.

For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.

BUILDING. Any structure used or intended to be used for human occupancy or for business purposes, but shall not include any private garage or stable or any structure used in connection with a building which is properly numbered.

BUSINESS DISTRICT. Any block in any street in the town where a majority of the front footage of the property facing upon the street is used for business purposes.

RESIDENCE DISTRICT. Any block in any street in the town where a majority of the front footage of the property facing upon the street is used for residence purposes or consists of vacant lots.

§ 15.12.020 REQUIRED; DISPLAY.

Every building in the town shall be numbered by placing on or over the door or gate used as the main entrance to the building or to the enclosure in which the building is situated, or adjacent to the gate so as to be readily seen from the street upon which the building or enclosure is situated, the appropriate number for the building, as specified in this chapter.

§ 15.12.030 SYSTEM GENERALLY; OFFICIAL MAP.

(A) The numbering of buildings in the town on the streets therein, as shown on the official maps of the streets on file in the office of the Town Clerk, is adopted and declared as the official numbering of the buildings.

(B) For the purpose of carrying out and continuing the system thereby shown, the system is declared to be as follows.

(1) In a residence district, two numbers shall be allowed to each lot or piece of land approximating 50 feet of frontage upon any street in the district.

(2) In a business district, two numbers shall be allowed to each 25 feet of frontage upon any street in the district.

(3) The numbering of buildings shall commence at the beginning of each street, the even numbers being on the right side and the odd numbers on the left side, and such directions being determined from the point of beginning of the streets and the commencement of numbering thereon, as herein stated:

(a) Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, starting at the boundary line between the town of San Anselmo and the Town of Fairfax, on Sir Francis Drake Boulevard;

(b) Forrest Avenue, starting at the boundary line between the Town of San Anselmo and the Town of Fairfax;

(c) Bolinas Avenue, at its intersection with Broadway;

(d) Porteous Avenue, at its intersection with Bolinas Road;

(e) Cascade Drive, at its intersection with Bolinas Road;

(f) Park Road, at its intersection with Bolinas Road;

(g) Azalea Avenue, at its intersection with Broadway;

(h) Willow Avenue, at its intersection with Sir Francis Drake Boulevard;

(i) Scenic Avenue, at its intersection with Acacia Road; and

(j) Laurel Drive, at its intersection with Cascade Drive.

§ 15.12.040 NEW CONSTRUCTION.

Every person owning any building, or the agent thereof, shall, within ten days after the completion or occupation thereof, obtain from the Chief of Police the appropriate number therefor and cause the building to be numbered as required by this chapter.

§ 15.12.050 NUMBERS REQUIRED ON ALL MAIN ENTRANCES; UNOFFICIAL NUMBERS UNLAWFUL.

All main entrances from streets to buildings or to separate apartments in buildings shall be numbered, and it is unlawful for any person, whether owner or occupant of any building or any apartment therein, to place, maintain or allow to remain thereon any number other than the one required by this chapter.

§ 15.12.060 SIZE; COLOR; MATERIAL.

(A) The number placed upon any entrance shall be of a different color from the background upon which it is placed, and each figure of the number shall be at least one and three-quarters inches in height and of proportionate width.

(B) All numbers must be made of substantial and permanent material and so placed or affixed as not to be easily effaced or removed.

§ 15.12.070 ALLOTMENT OF NUMBERS PER BLOCK.

(A) One hundred numbers or as many thereof as may be necessary shall be allotted to the property frontage in each block between two main streets; provided, however, that, when the length of any block in a residence district exceeds 1,250 feet or the length of any block in a business district exceeds 625 feet, 200 numbers shall be allotted to the block.

(B) When any street is intersected on its opposite sides by different streets, the hundreds on one side shall be made to correspond as closely as possible to the hundreds on the opposite side by allotting only 25 numbers, even or odd, as the case may require, to the side on which the blocks are shorter.

§ 15.12.080 CHANGE OF NUMBERS LIMITED.

Nothing in this chapter shall authorize the Chief of Police to renumber any block which is not uniformly numbered in accordance with this chapter, unless the renumbering is made necessary by the construction or alteration of the buildings, whereby the number of entrances to buildings on the blocks has been so increased as to prevent consecutive numbers without confusion.

§ 15.12.090 TEMPORARY USE OF OLD NUMBERS.

Whenever the owner, agent or occupant of any property has been notified to change the number of his or her building, the old number may be temporarily retained in addition to the new number; provided, however, that, in no case shall the old number be retained for a period longer than 30 days after the official notice to change the same.

§ 15.12.100 COMPLIANCE REQUIRED; NOTICE OF VIOLATION.

Whenever it comes to the notice of the Chief of Police that any building is not numbered as required by this chapter, he or she shall notify, in writing, the owner, agent or occupant of the building of the appropriate number therefor, and require the building to be so numbered as required by this chapter. A failure on the part of the owner, agent or occupant to cause the building to be so numbered within ten days after receiving the notice shall be deemed a violation of this chapter.
