6231 - Register required.¶
The proprietor of every establishment where sleeping facilities are made available to the public shall keep a register of all guests.
6231-1 - Definitions.¶
Whenever any of the following words herein defined are used in this article, it shall include but not be limited to those enumerated:
(a) Proprietor shall include the owner, manager, operator, desk clerk or other employee whose duty it is to register patrons of the establishment;
(b) Establishment shall include a hotel, motel, lodging house, guest house, boardinghouse or other facility where sleeping accommodations are made available to the public; and
(c) Guest shall include patron, lodger or roomer.
6231-2 - Contents of register.¶
The register shall contain for each guest:
(a) His name and address;
(b) the day, month and year when said person registered;
(c) the number of rooms he occupied;
(d) the name and address of every person over the age of twelve years who accompanied him; and
(e) if the registered person arrived by motor vehicle, the year, make and model of the vehicle as well as the license number and the state issuing said license for the vehicle.
6231-3 - Guest must sign register.¶
Before renting, furnishing or otherwise making available any room or accommodation to any guest, the proprietor of the establishment shall require the guest to sign the register.
6231-4 - Permanent record.¶
The register shall be a permanent record which must be kept on the premises of the establishment for two full calendar years next following the close of the establishment's fiscal year.
6231-5 - Display of register.¶
The register shall be available to any peace officer, as defined in Penal Code Section 817, for inspection in the normal course of his duties.
6231-6 - Failure to comply a misdemeanor.¶
The proprietor of any establishment who wilfully refuses or omits to keep a register or who wilfully refuses or omits to permit a peace officer to inspect, examine or make copies of a register shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. Every violation of any provision of this article shall be construed as a separate offense for each day or part of a day during which such violation continues.
