27-1 - Police department to hold.

Any unclaimed property not in excess of two hundred fifty dollars in value in the possession of the town, shall be held by the police department for a period of at least four months.

27-2 - When owner may recover; payment of costs.

At any tinge during the period that any unclaimed property is held by the police department, and prior to sale or retention by the town, as hereinafter provided, the owner thereof may recover the property upon proving ownership thereof to the satisfaction of the police chief, and the payment of any costs to the town that the police chief may determine to have been incurred in the towing, carting, storage, advertising or otherwise maintaining of such property.

27-3 - Inventory.

The police chief or his designate shall, at such times as in his discretion appears desirable, inventory all personal property which has come into the possession of the town and which has been unclaimed by the owner. Such inventory shall give a brief description of all property so held.

27-4 - Sale by town—Notice.

At any time after the property has been held by the police department for four months or more, the police chief may publish once in a newspaper of general circulation published in the county, a notice of sale at public auction of such property. Such notice shall give the time, date and place of sale, and shall be published at least five days before the time set for sale. The notice shall contain a brief description of the property to be sold, and the time, place and manner of sale. It shall also contain a brief description of property to be kept or destroyed and a statement that all of the listed property will be either sold, kept or destroyed if not claimed by the owner before the date set for the sale.

27-5 - Same—By auction.

At the time and place set for sale, the police chief shall hold a public auction and sell such property to the highest bidder.

27-6 - Disposition of revenue from sale and costs charged claimants.

All money received by way of costs or sale shall be transmitted forthwith to the town clerk for deposit in the general fund of the town.

27-7 - Property retained by town.

At any time after the property has been held by the police department for four months or more, any or all of such property may be retained by the town and need not be sold if, in the judgment of the police chief, such property is needed for a public use.

Following the sale, any property remaining unsold may be summarily destroyed or otherwise disposed of by the police chief, or, at his discretion, may be retained by the town for its use.

27-8 - Weapons, etc., not covered by chapter.

The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to beverages, weapons or legal tender of the United States.
