10.04.010 - Definitions generally.¶
The following words and phrases, when used in this title, for the purpose of this title, shall have the meanings respectively ascribed to them in this chapter.

10.04.020 - Alley.¶
"Alley" means a public highway which does not exceed twenty feet between property lines.

10.04.030 - Business district.¶
"Business district" means the territory contiguous to a street when fifty percent of more of the frontage thereon for a distance of three hundred feet or more is occupied by buildings in use for retail or wholesale business; also any territory contiguous to a street which is adjacent to or a continuation of a street within a business district when such territory is so designated by the city council.

10.04.040 - Chief of police.¶
"Chief of police" means the chief of the city's police department.

10.04.050 - Crosswalk.¶
"Crosswalk" means that portion of the roadway included within the prolongation of curb and property lines at street intersections.

10.04.060 - Highway.¶
"Highway" means every way set apart for public travel, except alleyways, bridle paths and footpaths.

10.04.070 - Intersection.¶
"Intersection" means the area embraced within the prolongation of the property lines of two or more streets which join at an angle, whether or not one such street crosses the other.

10.04.080 - Loading zone.¶
"Loading zone" means that space adjacent to a curb reserved for the exclusive use of vehicles during the loading and unloading of passengers or materials.

10.04.090 - Official warning and direction signs and signals.¶
"Official warning signs," "direction signs" and "signals" mean all warning and direction signs and signals not inconsistent with this title heretofore or hereafter placed or erected under this title or by authority of the city council.

10.04.100 - Operator.¶
"Operator" means any person who is in actual physical control of a vehicle.

10.04.110 - Overheight load.¶
"Overheight load" means a load exceeding the legal height limit as set forth in the Vehicle Code of the state.

10.04.120 - Overlength load.¶
"Overlength load" means any load exceeding the legal length limit as set forth in the Vehicle Code of the state.

10.04.130 - Overweight load.¶
"Overweight load" means any load exceeding the legal load limits as set forth in the Vehicle Code of the state.

10.04.140 - Overwidth load.¶
"Overwidth load" means any load exceeding the legal width limit as set forth in the Vehicle Code of the state.

10.04.150 - Park.¶
"Park" means to stand a vehicle for a period of time than is reasonably necessary for the actual loading and unloading or persons or materials.

10.04.160 - Pedestrian.¶
"Pedestrian" means any person afoot.

10.04.170 - Right-of-way.¶
"Right-of-way" means the privilege of the immediate use of the street.

10.04.180 - Roadway.¶
"Roadway" means that portion of the street between the regularly established curb lines.

10.04.190 - Safety zone.¶
"Safety zone" means that marked portion of the roadway reserved for the exclusive use of pedestrians.

10.04.200 - Sidewalk.¶
"Sidewalk" means that portion of a street between the curb lines and the adjacent property lines.

10.04.210 - Street.¶
"Street" means every way set apart for public travel, except alleyways, bridle paths and footpaths.

10.04.220 - Traffic.¶
"Traffic" means pedestrians and vehicles, either singly or together, while using any street for the purpose of travel.

10.04.230 - Vehicle.¶
"Vehicle" means every device or animal by which any person or property is or may be transported or drawn upon a street, except devices moved by human power or used exclusively upon rails. For the purpose of this title, a bicycle shall be deemed a vehicle.

10.04.240 - Vehicle Code applicability.¶
Whenever any words or phrases used in Title 10 herein are not defined but are defined in the Vehicle Code of the state of California and amendments thereto, such definitions shall apply. To the extent words or phrases defined in Title 10 are inconsistent with the same or similar words or phrases defined in the Vehicle Code, the definitions in the Vehicle Code shall apply.
