Sec. 7-1-69. - Permit required for signs encroaching on right-of-way; minimum standards.

(a) No person shall erect, construct, place or maintain any signboard, billboard, sign or advertisement in, over or on any public highway or street of the city unless a permit to do so has been obtained in writing from the director of public works, on such conditions as the director of public works may determine to ensure the safety of persons traveling upon such highway or street, on the following minimum standards:

(1) Single-faced signs. Single-faced signs placed flat against and supported by a building shall not extend over the right-of-way if less than eight feet above the right-of-way grade; at a height of eight feet or more, such a sign shall not overhang the right-of-way more than 12 inches.

(2) Double-faced signs. Double-faced signs supported by a building shall not extend further over the right-of-way than allowed under the following ratio:

For an overhang up to: The sign must be above the right-of-way:
6 inches 7 feet
12 inches 8 feet
24 inches 10 feet
36 inches 12 feet
48 inches 14 feet
60 inches 16 feet

(3) Extension limit. In no event shall any sign extend further than the face of any curb in front of any building.

(b) The permit described in this section is not in lieu of a building permit or any other permit required by any other applicable law.
