Sec. 2-26. - Definitions.

Unclaimed property is that property which comes into the possession of the city or one of its departments and for which there is no assertion of a right or title.

Sec. 2-27. - Care and Disposition.

(a) Unclaimed property shall be held by the police department for a period of at least three months from the time the city or one of its departments comes into possession of the property.

(b) After the time period as set forth in subsection (a) of this section, such unclaimed property may be sold at public auction to the highest bidder, with notice of such sale being given by the chief of police at least five days before the time fixed therefor by publication once in a newspaper of general circulation published in Colusa County, or may be transferred to the city purchasing officer for sale to the public at public auction. If, after the time period as set forth in subsection (a) of this section, the unclaimed property is transferred to the city purchasing officer, such property shall not be redeemable by the owner or any other person.

(c) If the city purchasing officer determines that any such property transferred to it for sale is needed for a public use, such property may be retained by the agency and need not be sold.
