§ 12.20.010. Definition.¶
“Street”
as used in this chapter includes avenue, court, way, drive or other principal public means of access to buildings or enclosures, but does not include alleys, except as otherwise specifically stated or shown on the plan for numbering streets and blocks.
(Ord. 29 § 1, 1949)
§ 12.20.020. Adoption of plan for numbering streets and blocks—Description.¶
There is adopted and established an official plan of the city of Brentwood entitled "Plan for Numbering Streets—Blocks, etc.," designated as Exhibit "A" to this chapter and made a part hereof and referred to in this chapter as the plan. The plan and the ordinance codified in this chapter are adopted for the general purposes set forth in the preamble of Ordinance 29. This plan, together with notations incorporated thereon, sets forth for each block or tentative future block in the city of Brentwood the general block number assigned to the block beginning with 100 or 00 as shown thereon, with the starting axes located adjacent to the easterly and southerly city limits. From the axes, the numbers shall run consecutively upwards block by block with certain exceptions as shown on the plan and caused by the existing street pattern. For example, any number of typically north-south streets shall be known and designated as No. _____ First Street, and any number on typically east-west streets shall be designated and known as No. _____ Chestnut Street.
(Ord. 29 § 2, 1949)
§ 12.20.030. Street names—Changes designated.¶
A. No change is made in the plan for numbering streets and blocks in the existing names of streets, except:
Maple Street is changed to Dainty Avenue, being an easterly extension thereof;
Brentwood Road is changed to Chestnut Street between Third Street and the city limits on the east;
Certain streets in the subdivision east of Griffith Lane and south of Dainty Avenue are given official names as shown on the plan.
B. For certain streets east and/or south of the axes the prefix "E." or "S.," as the case may be, shall be added to the names of such streets.
(Ord. 29 § 3, 1949)
§ 12.20.040. Block numbers—Assignment procedure—Exceptions.¶
Except as otherwise shown on the plan for numbering streets and blocks, one hundred numbers are assigned typically to each block (including the two sides of the street), a number to each twelve and one-half feet of frontage typically, or to each twenty-five feet of frontage for blocks exceeding approximately six hundred feet in length. The even numbers shall be on the southerly and easterly sides of the streets and the odd numbers on the northerly and westerly sides of the streets. Certain exceptions to these general rules may be shown on the plan for cases where there is lack of uniformity of block lengths on opposite sides of the streets or elsewhere, and where one hundred numbers may be assigned to two short blocks or to a portion of a block, as the case may be. Where one hundred numbers are assigned to two short blocks, fifty may be assigned to each block.
(Ord. 29 § 4, 1949)
§ 12.20.050. Entrance numbers—Assignment by plan—Duty of owner or occupant.¶
A. All main entrance numbers to buildings and/or enclosures from the public streets of the city shall be numbered in accordance with the plan for numbering streets and blocks and as hereinafter set forth. All required changes from any existing entrance numbers to a new entrance number provided by the plan shall be made at the earliest possible date, and at any event within a period of three months from the date of adoption of the ordinance codified in this chapter, unless such date is extended by resolution of the city council.
B. The duty of obtaining an assignment or reassignment of the appropriate entrance number is imposed upon the owner and/or the occupant of the building or enclosure to which any such entrance belongs or pertains. All such numbers or revised numbers shall be assigned by an official or department of the city of Brentwood designated for this duty, and the city shall cause to be prepared such block books or other documents as may be necessary and adequate for the purpose of keeping an accurate record of entrance numbers. After assignment, the entrance numbers shall be placed in figures not less than two inches high immediately above or adjacent to the doorway, gateway or other type of entrance to the building or enclosure.
(Ord. 29 § 5, 1949)
§ 12.20.060. Procedure for change or extension.¶
Any adjustments or extensions of the block numbering system delineated on the plan for numbering streets and blocks, which may be deemed advisable to meet changing block layouts or future conditions, are administrative acts and may be made by a resolution of the city council upon recommendation of the official or department charged with the duty of administering the provisions of this chapter. The adjustments and/or extensions shall be made so as to most nearly conform to the true purpose and intent of the plan.
