§ 16.04.010 DEFINITIONS.¶
For the purpose of this chapter, the following definitions shall apply unless the context clearly indicates or requires a different meaning.

§ 16.04.020 APPROVED.¶
APPROVED means approval by the Director of Public Works, Superintendent of Building and Chief Engineer of the county sanitation district as the result of investigation and tests conducted by them, or by reason of accepted principles or tests by national authorities, technical or scientific organizations.

§ 16.04.030 BOILER BLOW-OFF.¶
BOILER BLOW-OFF means the condensed steam or hot water from a boiler when blown off to remove scale and slime or blow-down from cleaning and repair.

§ 16.04.040 SUPERINTENDENT OF BUILDING.¶
SUPERINTENDENT OF BUILDING is the Superintendent of Building of the city or his authorized representative or inspector.

§ 16.04.050 CESSPOOL OR DRY WELL.¶
CESSPOOL or DRY WELL means an excavation in the ground which receives the discharge of a house connection sewer and which is constructed as required by the provisions of this code or other ordinances of the city.

§ 16.04.060 CHIMNEY.¶
CHIMNEY means a vertical section of a house connection sewer extending from a vertical tee or wye in the main sewer or from a long radius ¼-bend set vertically in the house connection sewer at the property line and in either case suitably reinforced with concrete.

§ 16.04.070 CHIEF ENGINEER.¶
CHIEF ENGINEER is the chief engineer of the county sanitation district or his authorized deputy or representative.

§ 16.04.080 DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS.¶
DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC WORKS is the Director of Public Works of the city or his authorized representative or inspector.

§ 16.04.090 DOMESTIC SEWAGE.¶
DOMESTIC SEWAGE means sewage derived solely from residences, business buildings or institutions.

§ 16.04.100 EFFLUENT.¶
EFFLUENT means partially or completely treated sewage flowing out of any sewage treatment device.

§ 16.04.110 HOUSE CONNECTION SEWER.¶
HOUSE CONNECTION SEWER means that part of the horizontal piping beginning 24 inches from the exterior wall of the building or structure and extending to its connection with the public sewer or cesspool, or septic tank or sewage treatment plant through where is discharged domestic or industrial liquid waste.

§ 16.04.120 INSPECTOR.¶
INSPECTOR means the authorized inspector, deputy, agent or representative of the Director of Public Works, the Superintendent of Building or the Chief Engineer of the county sanitation district.

§ 16.04.130 INTERCEPTOR.¶
INTERCEPTOR means a device for retaining sand, silt, grit, mineral material, petroleum solvent, grease or oil by gravity-differential separation from waste effluent and of a design and capacity approved by the Director of Public Works and Superintendent of Building.

§ 16.04.140 LOS ANGELES COUNTY SANITATION DISTRICT TRUNK SEWER.¶
LOS ANGELES COUNTY SANITATION DISTRICT TRUNK SEWER means a trunk sewer in the city under the jurisdiction of the county sanitation district.

§ 16.04.150 LOT.¶
LOT means any piece or parcel of land bounded, defined, or shown upon a plat or deed recorded in the office of the County Recorder which conforms to the boundaries of such lot as shown upon such recorded map, plat or deed; provided, however, that in the event any building or structure covers more area than a lot as herein defined, the term LOT shall include all such pieces or parcels of land upon which such building or structure is wholly or partly located.

§ 16.04.160 MAIN SEWER.¶
MAIN SEWER means any sewer in which changes of alignment and grade occur only at man-holes that provide access for cleaning and inspection. Such sewers are usually eight inches or more in diameter.

§ 16.04.170 PLUMBING CODE.¶
PLUMBING CODE means the uniform plumbing code of the city.

§ 16.04.180 PUBLIC SEWER.¶
PUBLIC SEWER means the main sewer or trunk sewer, constructed in a street, highway, alley, place or right of way dedicated to public use. The term PUBLIC SEWER does not include a house connection sewer.

§ 16.04.190 RUNNING TRAP.¶
RUNNING TRAP means a depressed section of the house connection sewer constructed of fittings so as to create a water seal to prevent the passage of gas from the public sewer.

§ 16.04.200 SEPTIC TANK.¶
SEPTIC TANK means a structure for treating sewage before disposal in a cesspool, seepage hole or leaching system, constructed as required by ordinances of the city.

§ 16.04.210 SEWAGE.¶
SEWAGE means the water borne wastes from dwellings, kitchens, restaurants, institutions, stables, dairies, business buildings and other similar struc-tures, but excluding any storm water, rainwater, surface water, ground water, roof or yard drainage.

§ 16.04.220 SEWAGE PUMPING PLANT OR EJECTOR.¶
SEWAGE PUMPING PLANT OR EJECTOR means any works or device used to raise sewage from a lower to a higher level or to overcome friction in a pipe line.

§ 16.04.230 SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT.¶
SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT means any works or device for treating sewage except any septic tank, settling tank or cesspool designed to dispose of domestic sewage from one lot.

§ 16.04.240 SPECIFICATIONS NUMBER 149.¶
SPECIFICATIONS NUMBER 149 means specifications for the construction of street improvements including storm drains, sanitary sewers and appurtenances in the city adopted by the City Council, June 12, 1950, and subsequent amendments thereto.

§ 16.04.250 TEE or T.¶
TEE or T. mean a fitting for a branch on which the spur joins the barrel of the pipe at an angle of approximately 90°.

§ 16.04.260 TRUNK SEWER.¶
TRUNK SEWER means a sewer in a trunk sewer system under the jurisdiction of the city or public entity other than the county sanitation district.

§ 16.04.270 WYE or Y.¶
WYE or Y. A fitting for a branch, on which the spur joins the barrel of the pipe at an angle of approximately 45°.
