13-25.1 - System to be Followed.

All buildings fronting on the avenues, streets and courts of the City of Alameda shall be numbered according to the following system:

a. Streets and courts running in a northerly and southerly direction shall be numbered from the south toward the north, one (1) number being allowed for each twenty (20') feet and Central Avenue shall be the basis for numbering the streets and courts. The first number northerly of the avenue shall be one thousand four hundred (1400).

b. Avenues and courts running in an easterly and westerly direction shall be numbered from the west toward the east, one (1) number being allowed for each twenty-five (25′) feet. The numbers of the avenues shall be so located that there will be ninety-nine (99) numbers west of First Street (formerly Main Street) and they shall increase in numerical order in an easterly direction so that the first number east of First Street shall be number one hundred (100), and the first number east of Second Street shall be number two hundred (200), and so on throughout the length of the avenues. In exception to the forgoing, for avenues and courts west of Main Street, the numbering shall be increased in numerical order in a westerly direction, so that the first number west of Main Street shall be number one hundred (100).

c. The even numbers shall be on the south and east sides thereof, and not more than one hundred (100) numbers shall be used in any one (1) block.

d. Where no basis is to be had at the beginning of an avenue or street for numbering the first crossing of the avenue or street shall be the basis for numbers and the numbers shall begin with number ninety-eight (98) on the east or south side of the avenue or street and number ninety-seven (97) on the west or north side thereof and shall number back to numbers two (2) and one (1).

e. Courts shall be numbered from avenues or streets upon which they open commencing with number two (2) on the south or east side of the court and number one (1) on the west or north side thereof and the number on courts shall be the same as the number of feet allowed for the numbers on the streets or avenues to which they are parallel.

f. All avenues and courts west of Main Street running in an easterly and westerly direction shall contain the prefix "West."

13-25.2 - Duty to Number Building; Time.

It shall be the duty of every person owning, occupying or controlling any building or store fronting on a public street or avenue in the City to number the same or cause the same to be numbered correctly and in accordance herewith, and it shall be the duty of any person owning, occupying or controlling any building hereafter erected within the City to so number the same within fifteen (15) days after its completion or occupancy.

13-25.3 - Expense.

All buildings must be numbered at the expense of the owner, occupant or person in control thereof.

13-25.4 - Size and Character of Figures.

The regulation City number shall consist of metallic figures, two (2″) inches in height, or something superior thereto, placed upon or immediately above the entrance of the buildings.

13-25.5 - Incorrect and Illegible Numbers; Notice to Correct.

In case any building in the City shall be unnumbered or incorrectly numbered, the number thereof shall have become defaced or illegible, it shall be the duty of the owner or occupant of the same to cause the same to be numbered correctly within ten (10) days after notification so to go given by or under the direction of the Building Inspector.

The notice may be served by leaving a copy thereof at the building in charge of any person, addressed "To the owner or occupant of this building," or may be given by posting such notice on the door or at the entranceway to the building. The notice shall specify the correct number of the building.

No person shall deface, remove or destroy any notice so posted until the building on which the same is posted has been correctly and properly numbered.

13-25.6 - Building to Give Correct Number.

It shall be the duty of the Building Inspector to give the correct number of any building upon demand, and to give the notification mentioned in the preceding subsection when the same appears necessary.
