CHAPTER 9. - SEISMIC STRENGTHENING PROVISIONS FOR UNREINFORCED MASONRY BEARING WALL BUILDINGS[[10]]

Subject to certain changes and amendments as hereinafter set forth in this Part, the City Council adopts, by reference, Appendix Chapter Al, Part 10 of the California Building Code which shall govern, regulate, and control all of the activities therein referred to and the same is made a part of this Chapter.

The purpose of this Chapter is to promote public safety and welfare by reducing risk of death or injury that may result from the effects of earthquakes on existing unreinforced masonry bearing wall buildings.

The provisions of this Chapter are intended as minimum standards for structural seismic resistance, and are established primarily to reduce the risk of life loss or injury. Compliance with these provisions will not necessarily prevent loss of life or injury, or prevent earthquake damage to rehabilitated buildings.
