Large Cash Payments: What to Expect

Get ready:

  • Determine when your taxes are due. Call to schedule an appointment 30 to 60 days in advance of the day you want to pay. Note that we can only schedule appointments at IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers (TACs) within 60 days of your call. (Note: IRS TAC operations may be limited due to the COVID-19 crisis or other administrative issues. When you call, we can provide you with the most up-to-date details.)

  • Estimate how much you will pay, the number and denominations of U.S. bills, the tax period(s) you want to pay for, and the type(s) of taxes you want to pay (e.g., income taxes for 2019). This helps us determine how much time your appointment will take and how our staff can best serve you.

  • Determine who will represent you. If you plan to send an employee or a courier on your behalf, please note that—for your safety and privacy—we won’t be able to provide a receipt unless your representative possesses a Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representativ e, or we have this completed form on file. Without that form, we will need to mail your receipt to you. More information about IRS power of attorney representation can be found here.

Give us a call:

  • Call the toll-free appointment service line at 844-545-5640, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. local time (Hawaii and Alaska follow Pacific Time Zone) to schedule your appointment.

  • We’ll ask when you need an appointment and will do our best to schedule your appointment at that time. We suggest calling 30 to 60 days before you want to pay. Note : Higher cash amounts, especially in smaller denominations, generally require longer appointments, which can affect how soon we can schedule you.

  • Your appointment will take place at an IRS TAC that is equipped to process cash payments. ( Note : not all IRS TACs accept cash payments, and not all of those that accept cash are equipped to receive payments of $10,000 or more).

Gather your materials:

  • An IRS TAC employee will contact you to confirm your appointment date, time and duration, location, and other information to help your appointment be as efficient as possible. Appointments generally last between 1-2 hours depending on the amount of cash you bring, the number of tax periods you want to pay for, and the number of tax types you need to pay.

  • Gather all of the paperwork and information you will need for your appointment:

»» Government-issued photo identification (such as a driver’s license or passport)

»» Your Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number

»» A completed Form 2848, Power of Attorney and Declaration of Representative , if not already on file, and you choose to send a third-party representative (more information about IRS power of attorney representation can be found here)

» The tax period(s) you want to pay for, and the type(s) of taxes you want to pay.

and Costs in our FAQs for tips on how to bundle bills). We are only able to accept currency that is processed through our currency verification and counting machines. Some bills may not process if they are dirty, damaged, or wrinkled. As a result, some taxpayers prefer to bring extra cash to ensure they can make a full payment just in case any bills are not usable. IRS staff cannot provide change.

  • Determine how far you will need to travel and factor in any traffic, or other issues that might affect your arrival time. Many of our IRS TACs are located in federal buildings that require you to go through a security checkpoint and show government-issued photo identification. Some locations suggest planning to arrive 30-45 minutes in advance. For a more accurate estimate, ask the IRS TAC employee who contacts you prior to your appointment about the average amount of time it takes to park, pass through security and arrive at that IRS TAC.
