Need to pay your taxes in cash? There are ways to pay.

By law, all individuals and businesses are required to pay federal taxes. The easiest and most secure way to pay is always online or through the IRS2Go mobile app. But some industries, such as cannabis, can have trouble obtaining a bank account and need to pay their federal taxes with cash using U.S. currency.

If that’s you, there are ways to pay . Our goal is to make the process of paying your taxes as convenient, safe and secure as we possibly can for every type of taxpayer.

Here are the ways to pay :

  1. For a fee, you can either obtain a prepaid credit card to pay online or through the IRS2Go mobile app, or you can purchase a money order or cashier’s check at a post office, grocery store, retailer or bank, and pay by mail. ( Note : most institutions have limits on how much you can put on a prepaid credit card or money order.) Never mail cash to an IRS office.

  2. If you need to pay less than $1,000, you can pay in person at one of our retail partners.

  3. If you need to pay with cash in person at a secure IRS location, you’ll need to make an appointment.

  • First, call 844-545-5640. An IRS representative will ask you for contact information and the approximate amount of your payment, the number and denomination of bills, and the tax period(s) and type(s) of taxes you want to pay (e.g., income taxes for 2019). They will help you schedule an appointment at an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) that can process your cash payment.

  • You should call 30 to 60 days before you want to pay to secure a convenient time. We usually can’t accommodate last-minute appointments. ( Note : IRS TAC operations may be limited due to the COVID-19 crisis or other administrative issues. When you call, we can provide you with the most up-to-date details.)

  • When you schedule an appointment to make a large cash payment of $10,000 or more, you’ll receive a confirmation call from an IRS representative at the IRS TAC to confirm the details of your payment and help you prepare for your visit.

  • IRS TACs that accept cash have controlled access to ensure your safety. Our specially trained staff will help make the process as convenient and efficient as possible for you.
