Supporting Documents for Clean Vehicle Credits

We need to verify the information reported on Form 8936, Clean Vehicle Credit, attached to your Form 1040, U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. Our records indicate that one or more of the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) reported on Schedule A (Form 8936) may be invalid or ineligible for the credit. Please provide the requested information and supporting documentation below. Submit your response electronically using the instructions in the attached letter. If you cannot submit your response electronically, mail it to the return address listed at the top of the attached letter.

Note: The Clean Vehicle Credit for vehicles acquired after September 30, 2025, was terminated under new legislation. Vehicles acquired before September 30, 2025, but placed in service after September 30, 2025, may still be eligible for the credit.

For each vehicle reported on Schedule A (Form 8936), list the VINs below and provide the following:

  • A copy of Form 15400, Clean Vehicle Seller Report (time of sale report),

  • A copy of the signed purchase agreement or sales contract,

  • Correct VIN if the previously submitted VIN was incomplete or incorrect, and

  • Any additional supporting documentation to substantiate the purchase of the vehicle.

Did you use the vehicle primarily in the United States

For new clean vehicles, did the original use of the vehicle begin with you? If not applicable, enter NA

For previously-owned clean vehicles, did you purchase the vehicle as a used vehicle? If not applicable, enter NA

Have you claimed a previously-owned Clean Vehicle Credit during the prior three years
