§ 5.06.010. Title.¶
The ordinance codified in this chapter shall be known as the "Business Registration Ordinance" of the city of South El Monte.

§ 5.06.020. Definitions.¶
Except where the context otherwise requires, the definitions given in this section govern the construction of the chapter.
"Business"
means every activity not specified in Section 5.04.055 of this Code whether such activity is a business or occupation or neither.
"Employee"
means all persons engaged in the operation or conduct of any business whether as owner, any member of the owner's family, partner, agent, manager and any and all other persons employed or working in the business.
"Person"
means an individual, partnership, firm or corporation.

§ 5.06.030. Registration required.¶
All business shall register with the finance director of the city immediately before the continuance under the provisions of this chapter, or the commencement of any business activities within the city.

§ 5.06.040. Business activity without registration prohibited.¶
No person shall engage in, conduct, manage or carry on any business if:
A. He or she does so without having registered with the finance director and paid the registration fee required; or
B. If such registration has expired.

§ 5.06.050. Exemptions.¶
The provisions of this chapter shall not apply to the activities of any department, division, or agency of the federal, state, or county government or political subdivision thereof or to the activities of any public utility.

§ 5.06.060. Fees and penalties.¶
The registration fees to be paid to perform, carry on, conduct or engage in any business shall be established by resolution of the city council. All fees and penalties are to be collected by the finance director for deposit in the city treasury.

§ 5.06.070. Violation—Penalty.¶
Any person violating any of the provisions of this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor punishable in accordance with the provisions of Section 1.16.010 this Code.
